16-Year-Old Boy Charged After Sharing Intimate Cell Phone Photo on Twitter

Information provided by the Stow Police Department.

A 16-year-old Stow-Munroe Falls High School student is being charged with telecommunications harassment after taking a photo of a girl performing a sexual act with him and putting it on Twitter, according to a Stow police report.

The act happened on Jan. 28 in a high school stairway, the report stated. The boy is 16 and the girl is either 14 or 15 years old, police said.

Using his phone, the boy snapped a picture of the girl while she was performing the act and first sent it to three friends, the report stated. The boy later posted the photo on Twitter and then took it down. By that time, the photo had started circulating in the school, the report stated.

A student saw the photo and reported it to a teacher, who reported it to administration.

Police charged the boy with telecommunications harassment.

A spokesperson for the school district said, "Both students will receive counseling through Stow-Munroe Falls High School and Stow Youth Services."

Counseling? Where's the punishment??? And to think - my teenagers could have walked by this trash in the hallway and been witness.

First of all. The girl performed the sex act on the stairs at the school. This is worse than the guy that took the picture & sent it. Then you have you have your snitches that had to be a tattle tale & in my opinion........Snitches are worse! Oh yes there are those that feel the need to call the cops to bring charges against the boy. Seriously, I think it could have been handled without involving the police! The girl was totally in the wrong more than the boy! She deserved what she got & I'm a female & I never acted like that, but there were girls that did when I was their age! To the other comment teenagers aren't so innocent & we real parents know that you can only shelter your kids so long & sheltered kids aren't too smart for the real world! Most parents try to play the innocent role when most of you know you weren't so innocent yourself when you were that age. Thank you, Mary Granata Smith

They are equally wrong. To have any type of sex act occurring in a public place is illegal. Sexting is illegal when it involves underage children. Sexting, indecent exposure, lude acts, you name it - they did it. And they are ALL against the law. Yes, charges need to be brought against the boy. Seriously. It's the LAW.

Neither child is "more wrong" than the other. I'm glad to see as an adult you feel as if you can pass judgement on the girl. Good for you! We're supposed to be teaching, not judging. Punishment is part of the learning process. It sucks, but there ya go. It's the law.

I am raising my children to be responsible, honest, and trustworthy. I raise my children to get involved in their community, to care about others, to speak up. "If you SEE something, SAY something."
It's these very "snitches" that we as adults count on to notify us of dangerous situations.

Mary, you certainly are entitled to your opinion - as am I. First off, having a young daughter myself, this is a horrible story. It sends chills down any parents' backs. To claim one child more wrong than the other, I find somewhat callous. I can remember looking up to the upperclassmen when I was in school and doing stupid things to fit in. I do not know any of the facts other than what's written, but being a man, I know how guys try to persuade and pressure girls. While I was a straight A student, did not drink or have sex until I was married, I still did my share of stupid things growing up. But thank goodness for snitches! We are not talking about name calling here. Without someone alerting the administration, counseling might never have intervened. Hopefully now the male student will learn how the click of a button can easily destroy someone's life. And hopefully the female student can get guidance with how to deal with the inevitable fallout and the path she might already be on or was about to take. But I implore you Mary, to reconsider your thinking "this girl got what she deserved" - especially since you are female.

agreed. it's sad to hear someone say "The girl was totally in the wrong more than the boy!" and "She deserved what she got." Mary, are you the type of person who says women who are raped "asked for it"? i hope you're not teaching your kids these principles (you don't live in Steubenville by chance, do you?). see, it actually takes two people to engage in a consensual sexual act. not sure if you realize that...

so who's in the wrong here? well, last time i checked sexual acts with a minor aren't exactly legal. neither is taking photos of them in such acts, nor posting them online. and finally, i'm pretty sure engaging in sexual acts in public has never been legal either. so should the police have been involved? absolutely. (in fact, they're both lucky they got off as lightly as they did.) would you prefer if these kids didn't learn a lesson, and just went through life thinking it was okay to behave in such a manner? i wouldn't.
