There's still about five months until the election in November, but Patch wants to know — how will you vote on the 10-year 7.84-mil renewal levy?

Be sure to take the unscientific poll and tell everyone why you will or won't support the ballot issue.

Voters will have the opportunity to decide whether a renewal levy that generates $7.3 million annually will be collected for the next 10 years for the Stow-Munroe Falls City School District this November.

The current levy is for five years at 7.3-mils and expires at the end of 2012. The renewal levy, which will still generate $7.3 million annually, is for 10-years at 7.84-mils this time.

If passed in November, the levy would cost the owner of a $100,000 home:

  • $240.10 a year
  • $20 a month

The first collection would begin in 2014 for the 2013 taxes.

This is a RENEWAL people! Unless you want the schools to take a dive and your property value to go down you should vote for it.

A vote against a RENEWAL is a vote against schools, not taxes.

shouldn't the question be: how many people are PO'd enough at the way the district strong-armed us last year into a new levy that they will vote this renewal down?

(not saying i'm for/against, just raising the point.)

I would agree that we need to make changes in the district and that some decisions in the recent years have not been the best. However, I don't think voting against a renewal is the way to voice that opinion. Yes it is the easiest way to send a message but who does it send the message too? There are Board of Education meetings you can attend. There are the members of the board you can contact. There are plenty of forums you can voice your opinion through but just to vote against this renewal as a way of making a point does nothing but hurt our community and our kids. I urge you consider a more useful method of showing you do not support the decisions by attending a board meeting or contacting the members but don't simply show up at the poll and vote against this renewal. If we want changes then we need to express them in a constructive way which means not only stating we do not support these decisions but by offering constructive options for the board to consider.

This leaves 10 years, yes folks, 10 years for the district to spend how they want with no checks from the community. Also, this levy that was passed initially was only supposed to be a temporary levy and should not even be up for renewal. I have a real problem with this. 10 years is a long time when most levy's are up for renewal in 3 to 5 years. My son will be a senior by the time this one expires.

I have not had a child attending our schools in 5 yrs and will vote FOR the renewal. Children are a precious resource and need the opportunity as past generations enjoyed.
