County's Property Value Complaint Forms Due April 2

The deadline to file a complaint against property values is Monday, April 2

The deadline for Summity County taxpayers to file a DTE Form 1--a complaint against real property values--is Monday, April 2, according to a press release from Fiscal Officer Kristen M. Scalise.

According to the fiscal officer, The Board of Revision hears complaints relating to the valuation of property. Taxpayers who feel their property values are too high have the opportunity to file a complaint and appeal to the board for property value reduction.

The complaint form for tax year 2011, which is required to be signed, dated and
notarized, must physically be delivered to one of the following locations by 4 p.m. on April 2, 2012:

  • Summit County Fiscal Office, 175 S. Main Street, Room 302, Akron, OH
  • The Board of Revision's Satellite Office, 2525 State Road, Room 153, Cuyahoga Falls, OH.

An April 2 U.S. postmark, by state law, is not acceptable, according to the release.

Property owners may obtain a complaint form by calling 330-643-2631 or by visiting their website at http://fiscaloffice.summitoh.net and choosing the Board of Revision Complaint link on our home page. The complaint form is a PDF fill-in for your convenience.

Board of Revision members are the Fiscal Officer, the County Executive, the County Clerk of Courts and /or their representatives.

I filed a few months ago right after we bought our house. We got a letter saying the value went up. We told them what we paid for the house and they adjusted it down to that number.

I just found out that our home would be exactly half the price if it were in New Haven, Indiana (a Fort Wayne suburb) where I went to high school. Not sure if that fact makes me very happy or very sad.
