Dick’s, Walmart Suspend Sales of Certain Semi-Automatic Rifles—What Do You Think?
In wake of Sandy Hook Elementary shooting, Dick's has removed all guns from the store closest to Newtown, Conn.
In the wake of the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, Dick’s Sporting Goods, one of the largest sporting goods retailers in the world, has suspended sales of certain kinds of semi-automatic rifles from its stores nationwide.
The company, which is headquartered in Moon Township, PA, also has removed all guns from its chain closest to Newtown, CT.
The move follows a decision made by Walmart, which pulled the Bushmaster gun from its website on Monday.
In a statement, Dick's said the move was made out of respect to the victims and families of Newtown. Friday’s shooting left 20 children, all between the ages of 6 and 7, and six adults dead.
Stow's Walmart is on Hudson Drive. The closest Dick's is on Buchholzer Boulevard in Akron.
“We are extremely saddened by the unspeakable tragedy that occurred last week in Newtown, CT, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families, and to the entire community,” a statement on the Dick’s website said.
CNN reports authorities are working to determine if Adam Lanza, the 20-year-old shooter who killed himself inside the elementary school once the shooting spree was over, tried to buy a gun at the Dick’s Sporting Goods in Danbury, which is about 12 miles away from Newtown.
“At this time, reports that the suspect visited one of our stores last week have not been confirmed by law enforcement," the sporting goods store said in a statement to CNN. "Based on our records, we can confirm that no firearms were sold to the suspect identified in this case."
It is unknown how long the ban on the semi-automatic rifles, also known as modern sporting rifles, will last, CNN reports.
We want to know what you think? Do you agree with Dick’s and Walmart's decisions to suspend sales of semi-automatic rifles? What about removing the guns from the store near Newtown?
Should they make the ban a permanent decision?

I disagree. People kill people whatever the type of weapon is used. Banning guns and stricter gun control is not the answer, criminals will get guns if they want them.

I am all for people having guns...but you don't need a semi automatic gun to go hunting...or go to the range...be smart about allowing people to have guns there are to many deaths lately and we need to protect our children...there needs to be strict gun control laws on who should be able to purchase these weapons.

this is excellent, actually. them choosing to pull products off the shelves (and likely lose money) that they feel are harmful and unnecessary, shows a lot of commitment to a moral cause. this is incredible really, for a company i generally see to be evil (walmart).
too bad it'll likely only be temporary. i'd love to see more stores doing this though (and doing it permanently); send a message to our politicians.

I guess there is a reason for the word JERK in the term Knee-Jerk. It appears that there were at least three items that led to the Newtown tragedy.
Reportedly, there was a mentally troubled young man being raised in a single-parent household, without a male parent influence...and he had access to weapons.
Let's see. Should we institutionalize everyone who does not act normally? Maybe we should remove children from Single Parent Households?
No, that would violate their Constitutional Rights. Never stand up in court. Well then, why don't we just walk right by that old Second Amendment Thingee? What did those grey haired, old white men know about drafting a constitution.
An to those like Melanie who magnanimously agree to "let (sic) people have guns". How absolutely white of you. Thank you so much. Am I also allowed to speak freely in public.
When you start suggesting that we take away constitutional guarantees, best be cautious...there might be some of yours that I would rather you not have...think about it a little.

Brilliant ! What a wonderful marketing strategy. Using this tragedy to get free publicity and pander to the gun control nuts. Good for business, yes ? Absolutely disgraceful.

Well Michael here's the thing..I knew someone would stomp their feet like a 2 year old and point out something wrong with what I said...way to act like a grown up how white of you ??..wow ...anyway the thing is I hate guns ...hate them..don't own any but the fact of the matter is if you try and take them all away then you can only imagine the up roar from that. You do have the right to speak freely... more power to you. People need to stop the aggression maybe you should start with yourself...this is why things are getting out of control...they want to take away guns..on no...lets not take away something that is causing the destruction of innocent people what sense would that make..or lets see see if we can take kids away from single parent homes?? what??.... people have rights there is no way to make everyone happy and they should there probably is not going to be a happy median on this ...but honestly if they want to take away some of my rights to protect lives...more power to them!! and that's my right to speak freely...:) everyone has an opinion this is mine.

Melanie, I will not try to change your mind or diminish your position. But let me offer this: Chicago has the highest rate of gun violence of any city in the U.S. Amazingly enough, they also have the strictest gun control. There have been over 5000 deaths by firearms there since 2001. This points directly to the fact that gun control just does not work. And, I would agree with Battaglia on one point.....never voluntarily give away any of your rights as an American. Even if you don't choose to exercise them, don't give them away.

Please! A bit uniformed and ignorant are thou. It is not guns but criminals that perpetrate crimes. The more guns in the hands of law abiding citizens, the more good guys to defend against the bad guys. Chicago has more people killed by guns than any other state and yet they have the strictest gun laws in the US of A.

Melanie,
what about protecting your children from tyranny? Do you believe that they should grow up to be serfs? Serfdom and the the rule of the samarai class (government approved weapons carriers with the power of life and death over the disarmed populace) are in the cards if we do not stop them.

Semi automatic and automatic rifles should be strictly regulated. I am all for the right to bear and carry arms, but when our second amendment was written it was during a time when muzzle loaders were the choice of weapons. Almost every mass murder we have had in the last 5 - 10 years was committed with semi automatic rifles. No one has ever given a good and LOGICAL reason why semi automatic and automatic rifles should be treated the same as a hand gun and be allowed to be sold following these same guidelines.

It has been illegal to own automatic weapons for decades. Most hunting rifles are semi-automatic. Time to outlaw hunting rifles, you say ?

I totally agree with you Denny and the majority on here. I am for the right to bear arms, but semi autos and automatic weapons? There is no need to be able to fire that many shots all at one time unless you are military and fighting a war. Yes, Lanza would have had access to other types of weapons, but how many less deaths may there have been if he wasn't able to fire 50 rounds a min? As far as hunting goes....I am not saying to outlaw hunting rifles, but you don't need that kind of a gun to go hunting.

I'm going to have to bow out of this discussion. I officially surrender. Although it has been illegal to own automatic weapons of any kind for decades, posters here still want them outlawed. The vast majority of hunting rifles are semi-automatic, and yet the previous poster says "you don't need that kind of a gun to go hunting". What kind ? The hunting kind ? What in the world is wrong with your reading comprehension ? Although I don't own or necessarily favor assault-STYLED rifles, I seem to be alone in failing to blame the gun for the actions of the nut-case holding it. Go figure. The gun committed the crime....spoons make you fat.....cars cause drunk driver deaths.....this forum is just lunacy.

Ed, you must realize that anti-gun zealots are not interested in restricting weapons...they are interested in banning them. I tried to do some work with MADD that would reduce Drunk Driving. I quickly learned that these people were Prohibitionists not interested in anything short of prohibiting consumption of alcohol.

Ed, You are wrong and uninformed. The mmajority of hunting rifles are not semi auto. I think the point you are trying to make is that there is a huge difference between automatic weapons an d semiautomatic . Isn't it startleing that most of these people here do not know or do not care to know the difference.

My husband has said guns don't kill people ..people kill people..I do agree with him there...but realistically we can not read peoples minds so we don't know who is going to use these guns...so I think the point that is trying to be made is the gun does kill people but without the person having access and using it ....well you figure it out...I also am done here

All I am saying is you don't need a semi auto to go hunting. You aim and shoot. You shoot to kill, not obliterate. Load and shoot.

There are several actions that would reduce gun violence over time. An assault weapons ban should be enacted and be an ongoing ban with no expiration date. There is no legitimate need for civilians to have these weapons. No one is thinking of confiscating weapons that people already own. However, we need to stop the flow of these weapons into our society. They are too dangerous with too much firepower. We also need a more effective background check system. All gun show sales and private sales must have a background check completed. We need a better process for identifying dangerous individuals and having them on the list for denial of applications to purchase a weapon. Ammunition magazines should be limited to ten bullets. There needs to be severe criminal penalties for individuals who purchase guns legally and then sell them to people who cannot pass a background check. None of these actions would violate the second amendment or prevent law abiding people from owning guns that are appropriate for defense of their home or for hunting. We need to do this to save thousands of lives. Its that simple.

Jeff, if your child were diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome; would you be in favore of having his name on a data base similar to sex offenders that would prevent him from obtaining a Concealed Carry Permit? How else would we be able to catch mental problems on a Gun Check?
Jeff Mittiga
8:41 pm on Tuesday, December 18, 2012
If someone is diagnosed with a severe mental illness where they often are not in touch with reality, I believe their name should be in the database for denial of the right to purchase a gun. Asperger Syndrome would not fall into that category.

One million percent agree Jeff! Just restricting certain guns and ammo isn't the solution. There are many steps that need to be taken to keep guns out of the hands of the wrong people. And yes Michael, that includes individuals with mental illness.

I will boycott Dicks and Walmart as long as they keep this ban in place. As a business, it's their choice to sell whatever they want and as a consumer, it's my choice where to shop.

Good for you Bob. It is amazing that there are so many people who refuse to recognize our Founders intent behind the Second Amendment. I have seen comments from apparently educated people who obviously have never read the constitution, let alone the Federalist Papers and other documentation that influenced those who wrote the Constitution and the defining Bill of Rights.

Blaming a gun for violence or killing is like blaming a pencil for a misspelled word, or a match for burning a house down. People need to be educated and informed. As much as I dislike agreeing with Ed this is lunacy. Most people are not capable of understanding this issue let alone help correct it. I am an Electrical Engineer, my training has been to be logical. In fact most of what I do is referred as logical programming. There is an old story around in engineering about Medical doctors. Seems as tho they were ask to research what and how a frog jumped. So they got a large bullfrog drew a line on the floor of the lab, sat him there and shouted "JUMP". They measured the distance 4 ft. Wrote this on their clipboard form. Next cut off one leg. repeated the same. Frog jumped , measured 3 ft. Cut off another leg measured 2 ft. Cut off another leg, repeated same, measured 2 ft.
Next cutoff the last leg Shouted "jump" frog did not move. The doctors research showed that FROGS WITH NO LEGS ARE DEAF" This is the type of thinking that is going into this emotional issue.
