Police Chief: 'Leave the Firework Displays to the Experts'

It's illegal to discharge fireworks in the city of Stow, reminds Police Chief Louis Dirker.

You may be able to purchase them around here, but it isn't legal to shoot them off in Stow.

Stow Police Louis Dirker said it is illegal to discharge fireworks in the city and officers will be on alert this July 4, 2012.

A message from the chief:

"For the safety of everyone, we strongly urge you to obey the law and leave the firework displays to the experts. Your safety, as well as those around you, is at risk when you attempt to discharge fireworks. With the current drought like conditions such as extremely dry grass, mulch and rooftops, there is a much higher risk of fire than usual for northeast Ohio. Please exercise caution when allowing the use of sparklers, smoke bombs and other small legal trick and novelty devices. Keep a water source close by and the State Fire Marshal suggests , 'sparkler wires should immediately be placed in a bucket of water to avoid injury as they remain hot for a few minutes after burnout.' Have a safe and happy Independence Day!"

Really? Come on. Several years ago when we moved in it was like a war zone in our neighborhood with fireworks going off every couple seconds. The air was like a thick fog of smoke and we had ash falling down everywhere. Not one officer drove down our street during that 3 hour period. I seriously doubt this Police Chief when he says that they will be on alert.

People have been setting off fireworks in our neighborhood for at least two weeks already. I, too, am cynical about enforcement.

Hopefully people wise up and understand how dry all of the grass and wooded areas are this week. Stowbillies, keep your lighters in your pockets.

Agreed Mike. I doubt it though. People love their cheap fireworks and with Kent canceling the show people will just turn to lighting off their own instead.
