POLL: Levy to Put Cops in Schools

Stow Mayor Sara Drew's Safety Task Force discussed the idea of a ballot issue to raise money to hire more cops to put in schools

At Thursday's meeting of Stow's Safety Task Force Mayor Sara Drew broached the idea, via a written statement, of a ballot issue tax to raise money to hire new police officers specifically to staff Stow-Munroe Falls Schools buildings.

Police chiefs for both the Stow and Munroe Falls departments said they would need extra officers to provide a full-time presence in the schools.

The task force has been charged with finding ways to improve security in the community and to make recommendations to Stow City Council and the board of education.

Drew said that one of the task force suggestions might be for a levy or ballot issue.

Stow has an EMS levy. It does not have a police levy.

There were armed officers in Columbine when that shooting took place and we all remember how that went, didn't change anything! We don't need full time officers, we need to recognize and properly treat mental health issues in this country without there being a stigma on the sufferers. Let's keep our eye on the ball.

Placing officers at schools is an extreme overraction to a terrible tragedy. It would create an unneeded financial burden on the residence of Stow to mitigate a problem that doesn't exist. Shouldn't we be focusing our efforts on more pervasive problems such as the seemingly increasing usage of meth and herione in the surrounding communities? Wouldn't that make our neighborhoods and schools safer?

Other news agencies are reporting that another meth lab was found in Stow yesterday. Meth and heroin aren't just in the surrounding communities...it's here big time. My wife works at an area hospital. I was shocking when she told me how many people from Stow overdose or die from the heroin here. I agree, Stow should hire more officers but put them on the streets instead of the schools.

I am all for security in the schools to prevent future tradgedies. However, I think that before we add another burdensome tax to the home owners of Stow and Munroe Falls we should ask the schools to tighten their belts to see what financial resources can be made available. We just passed two levies for the schools. We the public continue to get hit with the liberal tax and spend mentality. We just gave up 2% for social security and just wait until you see what Obamacare brings in terms of increased taxes. Does anyone pay attention to the inflation rates under this liberal administration? They are out of control. Check out your grocery bills. Why does it aways have to be the home owner that covers the bill. How about a student fee for parents? How about the school makes cuts where there is waste?

Would the whiny weepublican like some more cheese with his whine?
*Yawn* to the usual uneducated 'tightening their belts' & 2% cut TEMPORARY SS tax expiration. How about people like you educating yourself on school issues before commenting on anything educated related. Okay, great, thanks!
If everything is so burdensome, then pack up your whiny self and move. You sound like the homeowner who went into foreclosure because you bought more than you could afford.

LoL sounds like someone else noticed the cop at Giant Eagle right around 4:20pm yesterday. Just following up on one of those worthless anonymous tips.

Don't blame the cops though. They are just doing their job, and honestly I'm sure that cop didn't mind getting to relax for a bit.

Blame the citizens, for constantly jumping to these wild and mind boggling conclusions.

This is one of those ideas that makes people feel good but is it necessary? Statistically, children are still far more likely to be injured or killed in the car on the way to school than by some deranged lunatic at school. I think increasing police presence with regular patrols and school visits is a good idea but hiring 6-10 officers solely for the schools is a huge cost to address a very low risk. I think you would get more "bang for your buck" putting more funding into mental health issues than paying to have an officer sit around the school all day waiting for something to happen.

We do not need an officer in every school. Waste of money and ineffective.

Officers are not in every school all the time. Fishcreek and Echo share an officer - Highland and Lakeview share an officer. I do not know about Riverview and Kimpton. If safety was a focus why did they not place the officers in the schools after the Columbine shootings or after Chardon shooting? They are just doing this to make the public feel they are doing something? Things happen in the schools that are being swept under the rug that need to be looked at.... Woodland principal leaving.. ask around about that and the things you will hear - right there is a safety concern for me and she is employed by the school and has been inside our schools for many years.
