Poll: Would You Support a Ban on Cellphone Use While Driving?

Tell us why or why not in the comments.

On Tuesday, the National Transportation Safety Board called for a national ban on the use of cellphones and other personal electronic devices while driving.

According to a press release, the recommendation came after the board discussed a fatal accident in Missouri in 2010 where one of the drivers had been text messaging. The board’s recommendation calls for a ban of all uses of the devices, except in an emergency or when the device is created to support driving.

I use the GPS app on my cell phone to navigate to unfamiliar addresses. If this law goes into effect, I will no longer be able to do that. This law is overly strict, unenforceable, and several years too late.

Hi Debbie. That's a good point, and I wonder if GPS apps would be included in any future bans. This is just a recommendation from the National Transportation Safety Board. What do you think, readers? Should those kinds of apps be allowed?

It's a law that can't be enforced in most cases without police intrusion into the constitutionally protected privacy interest of your phone. In any case, Bluetooth/speakerphone calls should be exempt as being no more harmful than carrying on a conversation with a passenger. Good thought by the NTSB, but poor drafting and execution.
