Redmon Pulls Crematory Request, Doesn't Want to 'Jeopardize Reputation' in Stow

Redmon Funeral Home will not pursue expanding its services to offer cremation services in Stow.

Dozens of residents have turned out to Stow City Council meetings to voice their displeasure with Redmon Funeral Home's attempt to offer cremation services in the last few weeks and on Monday, the proposal was withdrawn from the city.

Here is a statement issued to the media from the president of the funeral home, Keith Redmon:

"We are not willing to subject the grieving families we serve to the planned activities that have been threatened, nor are we willing to jeopardize the reputation we’ve built over 44 years in this community.

Additionally, we appreciate the vast majority of neighbors and residents who support our efforts to further invest in and expand our services here."

During meetings many residents said they were concerned about the toxins being emitted into the neighborhoods. The funeral home located on Darrow Road is close to a residential neighborhood.

"Hearing these residents express their legitimate concerns has me leaning toward believing that allowing crematories in a residential area is probably not in the best interests of the city as a whole," Councilman Mike Rasor previously stated in his Patch blog.

What do you think of Redmon's decision? Are you happy, upset or indifferent?

"Toxins being emitted into neighborhoods." REALLY ? Someone actually believes that would happen ? Man, just when you thought you'd heard it all. Someone's got a very distorted imagination. But it looks like their hysteria worked. Nicely done. Chalk up another win for ignorance.

Patch needs to be more specific about TOS violations. Criticizing people -- vaguely -- and then having those posts removed because they allegedly violated this site's TOS is ridiculous.
You might as well not even post stories like this because anyone who criticizes people risks getting their posts removed. Or are some moderators of this site getting a little "tricker-happy" because some just-as-clueless readers are flagging comments they don't like? There's a big difference between comments one might not like and ones that are clearly against TOS.
But, perhaps that's why moderators mod Patch -- because they haven't a true clue on what should remain and what really shouldn't. "Oh no...some people don't like a comment" -- DELETE!
Criticizing (a group of) people based on statements mentioned in a story IS fair game. If you're going to blow out comments criticizing -- even harshly -- those statements, beliefs, etc, well, then, what in the hell is the point in comments section? You might as well close them.
And yes, I am calling Patch mods out. Or will you delete this and/or ban me because I am rightfully criticizing the questionable "editorial" judgment on posts?
Why does Ed's post stand? He was critical as well. Mine was more critical of people.
I've seen people call out Patch for their selective enforcement of their TOS. You can't have it both ways. Either enforce them ALL or not at all. And I will continue to challenge this.

Anyone interested in knowing that Tom Tucker (Family Guy character) previously went by Troy McClure (Simpson character)?

Hi Tom, No one at Patch is deleting comments because "some people don't like a comment." In fact, we love to see a healthy discussion between several people who don't always agree.

Criticizing is welcome, name calling is not.

And I would suggest that you email me or call me with any other problems you have and save the comments section of this post for comments related to this story. As always, I am always appreciative of Patch readers/commenters, etc. I just ask that the terms of use are followed: http://stow.patch.com/terms. Thanks!

Your dog/cats emmit more "toxins". If you break a CFL bulb you release more mercury than grandma's creamation with her fillings from 1980.

If I drive down that road on the 4th and smell Barbequing... I'm going to perform citizens arrest. Imagine ... animal Flesh being cooked over a flame and fumes/toxins being spread all over the neighborhood :)

So ..let's cap business growth which generate property taxes and provide local jobs.
Increase their costs/limit their growth so they move out....taking their property taxes /income taxes and JOBS with 'em. I'm sure everyone will pass to next property tax hike to make up for lost revenue; which will drive more businesses out..starting a death spiral.

I'm hoping Redmon considers building a crematorium in a "business zoned" area in Stow. I'm sure other communities will welcome the additional tax revenue.

My family has (and will use) funeral homes in Akron and Cuyahoga Falls because they offer creamation (cheaper since they don't have to "outsource" it).
Cuyahoga Falls recently approved 'em. Akron has been doing it for decades.

While I think this is an important news story that is clearly touching some nerves, I don't see how it qualifies as "BREAKING NEWS". Just my opinion. . .
