Resident Wants Path Cleaned Up: Letter to the Editor (Photos)

I live on Northview Drive in Stow, directly next to the Akron-General Health and Wellness Center/Stow walk path. The city has done NOTHING to keep this path cleaned up.

It is a complete mess! We work hard to keep our yard looking nice and directly next to us looks like a dump!

I am curious if anyone else around Stow has the same problems that live near paths. We find beer bottles, trash, and even a baggie with left over marijuana!

It is now mid-May and they have not cleaned up anything there are dead trees, etc.

When I have complained in the past for maybe three summers now, they put a bench facing my house that I have asked and have been told several times now that it would be moved so people cannot sit there and watch us here.

I have also seen kids sitting there smoking and grown adults making out! Totally uncalled for! The benches need to go!

I have young children that do not need to see this nor do I need to be worried about who is sitting there watching my kids play!

Who owns the pathway? The city or Akron General?

Perhaps you could "adopt" this area of the path and help the city maintain it? That would be a win-win for all! :)

"I have also seen...grown adults making out!"

Oh. My. God.
Adults showing each other public affection.
The humanity.

Who do I inquire for a refund of my time for reading this whiny non-sense?

I walk that path nearly every day and Ms. Gelonese seems to have some valid points.

First, there are 3 benches within about 100 feet of Northview Dr. She only mentioned the one that faces her house. She has young children and I applaud that she is concerned about their safety and what they are exposed to. This is their home.

There is another trail entrance nearby off of Mohican and there are no benches there. It is an area with less line of sight to someone’s yard. It would seem a simple solution to move that one bench there. There are also no trash cans along that path and common sense would indicate that it would be a good idea. There are ordinances for grass height in residential neighborhoods, which is what this is. Is there some reason that area is exempt because it may belong to a corporation?

Common sense and cooperation could easily fix this problem.

Bottom line, the pathway needs cleaned up. Numerous promises were made to move
the bench and yet there it sits facing directly into their back yard. I have a problem with
the children playing in the back yard and the bench facing the yard.

Promises by whom?
And the question still needs to be answered who is responsible for this path.

But, as usual with people in the city, they're quick to complain about the city before finding things out. Like facts.

i actually am not too familiar with this path, as i believe you can't bicycle on it. but for what its worth, the metropark bike/hike trails are kept very clean year-round. they clean up leaves regularly to keep the path safe, its regularly mowed and fallen trees are chopped up, there's very little litter, trash is changed out regularly and bathrooms are kept clean. so i understand your argument regarding cleanliness and general upkeep; you certainly can and should complain to the city (or the wellness center, if they own it) for them to be more on top of it.

as far as having the extra foot traffic, loitering, people being able to see your house/children, etc... i'm sorry but that's kind of the price you pay living next to a public facility. i live next to an elementary school and there's teenagers going back there at all hours (especially during the summer) to do god knows what. it sucks a little bit, but it comes with the territory of living next to that; you lose a little bit of privacy. my best advice is to try to put up a privacy fence or shrubbing, etc. i'm certain it'll improve the value of your home for future potential buyers as well.

regarding the bench: you can try to make them move it but honestly it's not out of line with what most bike/hike trails have. many have benches at the entrances, along with trash cans, etc.

As far as promises I have letters to prove it, in those letters it also states that ourselves and our neighbor are NOT to cut the grass. We were doing so because they were not! I have found out all that I need to and for 3 years nothing has been done. Funny how people want to complain about reading things but yet still come back and have to get there two cents in! I completely get it that we live next to this so called path but I have EVERY right to make a valid complaint!

Yet, you have not answered the question posed who is responsible for the path. The city? AGMC? Or shared responsibility? I'm going to guess since AGMC's name is on it, they are (mainly) responsible for the maintenance of the path, not the city.
And, until then, I stand by criticizing those who are quick to blame the city (like you have) before finding out the facts.

THE CITY OWNS IT! And btw they have been working their little taiLs off today cleaning it up....so you can go comment on someone else's story now! So who's right?

No one is right.

A question was asked TWICE (or was it 3) and you finally answered it. And because a company name is attached to the trail, asking who is responsible is a valid question.
Get over yourself, Ms. Complains-A-Lot.
