There's still weeks until the election in November, but Patch wants to know — how will you vote on Issue 67 — the 10-year 7.84-mil renewal levy?

Be sure to take the unscientific poll and tell everyone why you will or won't support the ballot issue.

Patch asked readers in June to take the poll attached to this story and as of Sept. 16, 52 percent of voters were against the renwal levy.

Voters will have the opportunity to decide whether a renewal levy that generates $7.3 million annually will be collected for the next 10 years for the Stow-Munroe Falls City School District this November.

The current levy is for five years at 7.3-mils and expires at the end of 2012. The renewal levy, which will still generate $7.3 million annually, is for 10-years at 7.84-mils this time.

If passed in November, the levy would cost the owner of a $100,000 home:

  • $240.10 a year
  • $20 a month

The first collection would begin in 2014 for the 2013 taxes.

Kevin,With all the empty and foreclosed homes ,low student enrollment, less state funding, etc. So the taxpayers of the city would have to make up the difference which cost you more ! Which the treasurer doesn't want people to know.ITS all about the money not the education of the kids.just remember the superintendent and treasure need to pay for their contract raises

Really, its all about money. Hmmmm!!! Do you mean, if in the best interest of the kids, would teachers not take a raise, or are the teachers money hungry and wanna work at least as possible people? I chose the second!!!!

The teachers did not take a pay raise for the last two years. in fact we took a pay decrease to increase paying our insurance. But feel free to think we teachers are all about the money and don't put in our our personal time and own money into our profession!

Melissa, basically you guys FINALLY did what every other private sector employee has been doing for years.... taking pay freezes and contributing to their health care.... I have no sympathy and I'm not going to pat you on the back for finally putting some skin in the game. The disconnect is unbelievable.
Not everyone who votes no for the renewal hates kids, maybe they simply can't afford it (yes, I get it's a renewal but voting no would help them offset the last levy passage). I'm not sure how I'll vote at this point but I'm tired of people hating on people who plan to vote no.
Also, people need to wake up to the fact that this renewal is for TEN YEARS, not the usual 3-5 and that is going to turn a lot of people off!!

If the levy is for 3-5 years, then people get turned off because every time they turn around there is another levy on the ballot.

No Name, yea!!!!

Kent please do not forget that another renewal will be coming up after this one. As far as the pay cut. Is there not a stipend to be given out, $500 part time and $1000 full time? Premiums for medical and dental coverage employees pay for family 153.86 Single premiums 63.23. Taxpayers (school district pays) 1384.62 family premium 569.06 for single coverage. Now how many are signing up for more than one family plan?

Why is levy not in more of the spot light? When the NEW levy was on the ballot a year ago, the coverage seemed to be constant. Will there be any reporting on this renewal?

The levy issue on the ballot November 6 is also a renewal: shall one existing levy, ballot rate of 7.84 mills, be renewed. This levy also provides emergency requirements for general operations. Therefore, if renewed, the same annual
requirement of $7,300,000 will be levied, during a ten year period. The tax rate must be set each year, according to the new total assessed valuation, to levy the annual amount of $7,300,000 .The actual tax rate for the existing levy, for the revenue years of 2008 through 2012:
2008: 7.67 mills
2009: 7.53 mills
2010: 7.47 mills
2011: 7.41 mills
2012: 8.05 mills*

*Total assessed valuation went down for collection year 2012, as a result of the triennial update to all evaluations for tax year 2011. Thus, the tax rate had to be adjusted upward to levy (bill and collect) the total amount of $7,300,000 in 2012.

I hope this information will be useful to you.

So basically this is not a new tax, which is correct. But it is for 10 years. Now when evaluations on property values in the future go down, the taxes you pay will go up? And if the value of your property go up, then your taxes will go down? Anyone seeing there property values going back up the near future? Is this fair to the seniors, in our city? Also on this link http://www.smfschools.org/assets/attachments/file/REV_EXP%202012%5B1%5D.pdf the graph that the treasurer put together, shows 21% of expenditures are for fringe. What are those fringe? Should those be looked at? It was suggested that a smaller millage be put on the ballot for 2 years, then when the NEXT renewal is up, the finances could be reevaluated to possibly, if needed, combine the two levies.

Yes it is a new tax if any of the criteria of the tax change. This changes the 5 year limit of accountability that the previous levy gave the voters. I for one am not going to give the SMFSD a ten year pick-pocket pass

Please keep in mind that without money, the educational opportunities for our children will be diminished. If the district can't offer what parents expect, then the area will become a less desirable place to live and property values will decline. I don't think any of us want that. My kids deserve a good education so for me, it's a no brainer. I will vote for the levy. I have had a very positive experience with all the teachers and staff that I have interacted with for both my kids and I believe the vast majority are in education because they care.

Think about this:
If the levy is to fail there will be:
No more field trip bussing
No more high school busses
Less teachers
Less support staff
Less after school activities if any at all
More crowded buses etc.

So if the levy doesn't pass have fun. Happened to us.
