'This is a Robbery!' Man Linked to Incident in Ravenna

The following information was supplied by the Portage County Sheriff's Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

The man who attempted to rob the CVS in Stow Jan. 14 was also recently linked to an attempted robbery in Ravenna, according to Portage County Sheriff David Doak.

The sheriff's department charged Joe R. Schrantz, 40, of Englewood Drive in Stow with attempted robbery, a second-degree felony.

On Jan. 14 around 1:55 a.m. deputies went to the Kent-Ravenna Walmart on S.R. 59 because they got a call about an attempted robbery. According to the report, the man showed the cashier a handgun.

"When the cashier had difficulty opening the cash register, the subject fled from the store and left the area in a motor vehicle," said Doak's office. The cashier was unharmed.

Stow Police responded to an attempted robbery about 30 minutes before the attempt in Ravenna. Stow Police said they arrested Schrantz and charged him with robbery for yelling "This is a robbery!" at CVS, then fleeing without any cash Jan. 14

Police also said his description matched that of a man who was arrested for robberies that happened in Stow and Cuyahoga Falls in September.

Schrantz is currently in custody at the Summit County Jail.
