$236,000 in energy upgrades included lighting by Stow company
Goodwill Industries of Akron can thank a Stow firm for helping the non-profit achieve Energy Star certification from the Environmental Protection Agency. Stow-based USIlluminations was one of several contractors to upgrade or retrofit utility operations at the non-profit's Waterloo Road facility to cut down on energy use. Brenda Baum, communications manager for Goodwill Industries of Akron, said the agency spent about $236,000 in total over a span of three years. "We’re done, but it doesn’t mean that we’re not constantly looking at whatever new opportunities might be available," Baum said. City to buy about 0.05 acres as part of road widening project
The city of Stow is well into negotiations and buying properties along Graham Road for the road-widening project to start construction as early as January 2014. The most recent land buy approved by Stow City Council is for a sliver of land in front of Rocco's Pizza on Graham Road. Council signed off on spending $23,000 for about 0.05 acres of road-front property in front of the pizzeria near the intersection with Hudson Drive. Practically every road-front property on Graham Road from Bath to Hudson roads will be touched by the Graham Road widening plan to improve traffic flow. Planning commission signs off on 14,000 square-foot building
The industrial Alpha Parkway near State Route 8 is going to get a new tenant. The Stow Planning Commission approved a site plan Tuesday for a new, 14,000 square-foot facility on 2.5 acres for QuestMark Flooring. QuestMark currently has offices on Allen Road and will be relocating to the Alpha Parkway site, according to minutes from Tuesday's commission meeting. Stow Planning Director Rob Kurtz said J & E Development, the firm that owns the facility where QuestMark operates today, is planning to build the new facility for the firm, which specializes in industrial, commercial and retail flooring. Program focuses on personal, professional leadership development
A new format is coming to the Stow-Munroe Falls Adult Leadership Program, a nine-month course designed to advance personal leadership skills for members of Stow's business community. Doris Stewart, executive director of the Stow-Munroe Falls Chamber of Commerce, which organizes the class, said the program took a brief hiatus until four graduates from the 2010-2011 course looked to revamp it for 2013-2014. It's that time of year again when the Stow-Munroe Falls Chamber of Commerce is looking for input from its members and non-members on two prestigeous awards. Nominations for Business Person of the Year will be accepted from chamber members only. Nominations for Friend of the Community will be accepted from both Stow and Munroe Falls residents. "This individual should show a long-standing commitment to the community and be an 'unsung hero,'" according to a chamber Facebook post. (Membership is not a requirement.) It costs $410 less to get an MRI in Summit County than in Cuyahoga County. That's according to data from New Choice Health, a private company that encourages people to become smarter healthcare consumers. The two counties border each other, Cuyahoga County includes the city of Cleveland and the headquarters for MetroHealth Medical Center, University Hospitals and the Cleveland Clinic. These big regional differences have been in the news lately: As the Washington Post wrote last week, "One hospital charges $8,000 - another $38,000."
