Battle of Vicksburg topic of Oct. 9 Cuyahoga Falls Historical Society meeting

The Weds., Oct. 9 meeting of the Cuyahoga Falls Historical Society will feature a presentation on one of the Civil War’s pivotal engagements, the Battle of Vicksburg. The meeting, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 7 p.m. in the Sutliff meeting room at the Cuyahoga Falls Library, 2015 Third St.

Speaker for the event will be Stow resident Denny Reiser, who will deliver a presentation on "The Battle of Vicksburg, the other Gettysburg." Said Reiser, "The war between the North and the South was fought in two theaters. Most people are familiar with the Battle of Gettysburg in the Eastern Theater, but fewer people know about the significance of the victory at Vicksburg in the Western Theater."

President Abraham Lincoln is said to have recognized the strategic importance of Vicksburg early on, observing, "See what a lot of land these fellows hold, of which Vicksburg is the key, the war can never be brought to a close until that key is in our pocket."
