Junior Firefighters Raise $1,670 for Relay for Life

Stow Safety Forces relay team holds inaugural public fundraiser

The inaugural Stow Junior Firefighter Training Academy was a success.

The event, a public fundraiser for the Stow Safety Forces Relay for Life team, raised $1,670 for the American Cancer Society research fundraiser.

Deb Berkey, administrative assistant at the Stow Fire Department, said 145 children took part in the academy on Saturday at Stow Fire Station No. 3.

For a $7 donation, children got the chance to to train with some of Stow's finest. The main activity during junior firefighter training was an obstacle course that took children through various events on a smaller scale that a firefighter might encounter on the job.

Children also got the chance to explore a Stow fire truck and the police department's DARE car. And kids got to try on child-sized firefighter gear.
