Aftermath of Wind Storm: Power Outages, School and Road Closures

A wind storm that picked up overnight knocked out power to more businesses and residents in the city.

FirstEnergy Corp. said power has been restored to about 430 of the 450 homes and businesses that were without power this morning because of high winds and trees falling onto power lines.

is closed today. The school has power, but the district said power lines are down nearby on North River Road.

As of 8 a.m., Mark Durbin, spokesperson for FirstEnergy, said there are 15,000 in the Akron area without power. 

In Stow, 450 homes and businesses are without power this morning. Durbin said there is a tree down on power lines on Darrow Road near , causing outages to those in that area. 

 are rerouting traffic at Kent Road near Graham Road because of a downed line.

He was unsure how long power has been out, but assumed it was early this morning when the wind storm gained momentum.

Crews are working to restore power as soon as possible, Durbin said. 

A High Wind Warning and a Wind Advisory are in effect until 10 a.m. in Stow, according to the National Weather Service.

Wind gusts of up to 60 mph are "expected and damage to trees, power lines and property are possible with winds of this magnitude," according to the weather report. Even "high profile vehicles are at risk of being blown over."
