Betty Crocker Recipe Winner Compares Experience to Finding Wonka's Golden Ticket

Holly Phillips won Betty Crocker's online gluten-free recipe contest after receiving the most votes online.

Holly Phillips of Stow was delivered her "golden ticket" not by chocolate bar, but via Fed Ex Nov. 1.

She received word from Betty Crocker that she won the Betty Crocker gluten-free recipe contest and was the winner of $5,000 and some other great prizes.

"My hands were shaking when I opened it. When I saw the word 'CONGRATULATIONS!,' I felt like I had found the golden ticket! I was so excited, I couldn't believe it was real," said Phillips.

Thousands of entries were submitted, but Phillips' recipe for apple spice cupcakes with maple cream cheese frosting and candied walnuts was selected out of thousands of recipes as the winner.

"I really wasn't sure [if I'd win] since there were so many entries, but I knew I had a delicious treat, so I had all my fingers crossed," she said.

Along with the $5,000 grand prize, Phillips will also get the chance to be featured on a Betty Crocker Gluten Free dessert mix or Bisquick Gluten Free baking mix package and/or be featured in a Betty Crocker publication

"There is a possibility the recipe will be on the back panel of the Betty Crocker gluten free Yellow Cake mix but I have not yet received confirmation," she said.

The prize money is going toward a new commercial convection oven for the her and her husband  are opening. The store, Mrs. P's Gluten Free Bakery, is expected to be open soon. 

"We're putting the finishing touches on right now ... going through our last round of inspections and we will begin test baking with our new equipment," Phillips said. "
