Drug Mart Plans Move — What Should Replace It?

The business at 4044 Fishcreek Rd. wants to move down the street to a location that has more space.

Discount Drug Mart plans to continue to save you the run around in Stow — but in a new location soon. 

The store is waiting for the final go-ahead from council, but it wants to leave the space at 4044 Fishcreek Rd. and build a new store at 3956 Fishcreek Rd. 

Planning Director Rob Kurtz said the space will be 27,000-square-feet and will have a brick exterior. The new location allows for 111 parking spaces and there will be a more accessible drive-thru lane. 

Several weeks ago, the planning commission OK'd the plans. 

David Howe, the architect for building, said Drug Mart wants to move for two reasons: more space and more recognition. 

"The present building is smaller than what they'd like. Plus, they feel the recognition from the people on the road is not quite as good as they would like," Howe said. "They think this location will be more visible and will help the volume of business. The drive-thru will be much handier than the one now is back behind the building."

The move isn't finalized yet, but if it is — what would Stow residents like to see in the soon-to-be former Drug Mart space?

Would love to see an Ace or True Value hardware store go in there. Need something like that on that side of Stow.

Yes indeed ! I'll sure second that. We are in need of a good hardware store here ! Haven't had anything handy since Stambaughs left.

I also agree. If you just want something small, Lowe's isn't worth the trip. I prefer going to the Ace Hardware in Hudson. But it might be too close to put another one in Stow. I, too, miss Stambaugh's. Also, a cofffee shop like Mocha Joe's would be nice, and there are more surrounding stores and the high school nearby.

while a hardware store wouldn't be bad, from the center of stow it's about as far to get to lowes as it is to get to drug mart. and slightly further than that to get to ace in hudson. so i don't see it happening. i'd still love to see a trader joe's or mustard seed go in somewhere nearby, but i've heard they have no interest in the area. too bad. so...maybe a gigantic liquor store?

I would like a hardware store also but Drug Mart actually has most minor items that I don't want to drive to lowes for. A specialty grocery store like Trader Joes or Mustard seed would be awesome.

I don't think a liquor store can go there, as the Giant Eagle up the street just got their license.

Drug Mart has plenty of customers at their current location. I hope they will reconsider and remain at the current location. If they move to the adjacent 5 acre property ..... they will be bulldozing and paving over a scenic property. We need more green space in Stow .... not less. Then, the old location will remain as a vacant eyesore for years. Oregon Trails shopping center will also go downhill without their anchor store. There are already 2 vacant stores and the parking lot is a mess with lots of potholes.

I echo the recommendation of a hardware store like Ace or True Value. As far as proximity to the Hudson store I don't feel that is an issue since it would be close to a different retail area and different communities. You must consider what is available for hardware/etc going towards Kent & Munroe Falls, to my knowledge there isn't anything. If I'm wrong please let me know, I would love not driving to Lowes for that one item you find you need in the middle of a project.

I like the idea of a hardware store as well. I believe Trader Joe's is already committed to the new development in the Falls (Portage Crossing). Whatever it is it might need to be able to generate enough income to resurface that parking lot which is a complete mess.

"Whatever it is it might need to be able to generate enough income to resurface that parking lot which is a complete mess." Have you seen the Ace Hardware parking lot in Hudson? They don't seem to mind a couple pot holes either. It's been pretty bad for years with no or little repairs done.
