Gymnastics and Motor Skill for Babies and Toddlers
Danielle and Diane Waskowski have been a mother/daughter team at a local gymnastics studio they created. Diane is certified in KAT training, while Danielle is certified in USAG, and first aide.
This is one of a series of blogs we are going to do about motor skill development for toddlers and babies.
While I am no doctor, between my mother and myself we have over 30 years of experience in the gymnastics field. This blog describes motor skill and what it is.
- You want to start your baby in a class called mommy and me, starting around the age of 18 months. Some babies start a little earlier depending on their development. We like to start kids in classes during mornings or evenings, to give parents the variety they need. These classes normally go about 45 min.
- Motor skill is working with your child on tumbling skills like forward rolls, walking while balancing, jumping, skipping, things that would make stronger hand and eye cordination and work on making the brain work stronger.
- There are some classes in development that work with babies younger than 18 months. These involve stretching the babies legs, clapping hands with baby, moving babies arms, and moving to music. A class like this normally last about 30 min.
Your class with your baby and early toddler is something you will always remember with your young child. Some venture longer into a life-long love of gymnastics, while some venture on to other things. These classes are something most will enjoy, and the children will remember for a long time!
