Witches summoning spirits of the dead, skeletons walking, and bodies rising from the grave aren’t just scenes from horror movies. They are also accounts recorded in the Bible. Join Dr. David Weyrick, pastor of Stow Presbyterian Church, as he investigates some mysterious and scary scripture passages that will reveal truths about God in “Spooky Stuff from the Scriptures: Don’t Be Afraid! It’s the Word of God” on Sunday mornings from October 14-28.
“It seems our culture has more and more of a fascination with weird, spooky things,” Dr. Weyrick said. “Those same spooky things which people watch and read about these days, like ghosts and witches, are actually in the Bible.”
The series will include the account of King Saul visiting a medium in Endor to conjure up the prophet Samuel from the dead, and Ezekiel’s visit to a valley of skeleton bones. It will also explain what happened after Jesus died on the cross, when the Bible records incidents of graves opening and the dead walking.
Dr. Weyrick said people’s interest in the macabre is part of human nature.
“[People] are searching,” he said. “The way I have it figured out is that each of us is created with a soul, what I like to call the ‘God box.’ We are created to fill that box with God, and in Christianity we believe that is done by the Holy Spirit in a connection with Jesus Christ.”
Dr. Weyrick explained that some people spend their lives trying to fill that empty box with the wrong things, like addictions or bad relationships or even the occult. However, the only real completeness comes with God.
“I want everyone to understand there is an unseen world but we don’t need to go there,” he said.
