A black bear was spotted by a Cuyahoga Falls police officer at 1:22 a.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Marc Drive and State Road.

As the officer pulled up to the bear, it ran and vanished in a nearby wooded area, according to a police report.

Employees of Alside, a business located at 3773 State Rd., were warned a bear was spotted in the area.

Calls to Alside representatives weren't immediately returned Tuesday.

A black bear was also spotted in Stow at 8 a.m. Monday west of State Route 91 in the Heather Hills neighborhood.

"Black bears are native to Ohio and there were more than 200 black bear sightings in Ohio in 2012. They are on the states endangered species list and all black bears in Ohio are protected by state law," according to a prepared statement issued by the Stow Police Department

Black bears are usually fearful of people and do not attack or kill adults, children or pets as long as the bear is given its space and not cornered.

People should keep their distance and remain calm if they see a bear. Do not approach it, according to Stow police.

To report observations of black bears, call 1-800-945-3543.
