Stow Foreclosures on the Rise

More properties sold at foreclosure auction in 2012 than in previous 5 years.

For now, the number of foreclosed properties across Summit County appear to have leveled off.

Yet in Stow, more houses are selling at foreclosure auction each year.

In 2012, 92 properties in Stow sold at foreclosure auction — the most in the past five years. A total 140 properties were scheduled for auction last year. Of those, 45 were canceled meaning 65.7 percent were sold.

The total number of properties scheduled for foreclosure and that actually sold at auction break down as follows dating to 2007:

  • 2011: 153 scheduled, 77 sold
  • 2010: 141 scheduled, 63 sold
  • 2009: 97 scheduled, 44 sold
  • 2008: 138 scheduled, 75 sold
  • 2007: 84 scheduled, 54 sold

Since 2009, Stow has experienced an average yearly increase of 16 properties sold at sheriff’s sale.

As a result of the steady increase Stow properties have accounted for more of the total sold countywide each year.

In 2007, Stow properties accounted for just 2.2 percent of the total 2,407 properties in Summit County sold at foreclosure auction.

By 2012, properties in Stow accounted for 5.1 percent of the 1,811 properties across Summit sold at sheriff’s sale.
