How to Get a Building Permit in Stow

If you're planning home improvements, don't forget to get a building permit.

Whether you’re a new home owner or you’ve lived in the same place for many years, making improvements to your home are just part of the joy — or pain — of homeownership. But some changes to your home will require a building permit before you get started.

Here are five things to know about getting a building permit in Stow:

1. When do you need a building permit?

If you will be doing your own work, then you will need to apply for the building permit. Projects that require a building permit include:

  • Building an addition, deck, porch or fence
  • Replacing your roof or siding
  • Installing a swimming pool

Plumbing permits for hot water heater replacements need to be obtained from the Summit County Division of Building Standards.

If you are using a contractor for the project, make sure they are registered with the city of Stow by checking the list of registered contractors on the Building Department Website.

Permits are not required for routine maintenance including new flooring, window replacement and painting.

“If there is ever a question as to whether or not a building permit is needed, just give us a call,” said Stow building commissioner, Bud Carey. That phone number is 330-689-2729.

2. Where do you go to apply for a permit?

Apply for a permit at the city of Stow Building Department at 3760 Darrow Rd. between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Call the building department at 330-689-2729 for more information.

3. What should you bring when applying for a permit?

Most permits require two sets of plans and a site plan when you apply. You can save time by downloading the permit from the city’s website and taking it with you. Most permits require a waiting period for plan review, however siding and roof permits can often be issued over the counter.

4. How much does a permit cost?

Permit costs vary by project and start at $50 for roofing and siding projects. See a full fee schedule on the city’s website.

5. What about inspections?

Building permit fees help to pay for inspections that are required for all projects. The total number of inspections will vary by project type.

Generally, inspections are required at the following benchmarks:

  • Before covering or concealing work
  • Installation of footing drains, building drains and building sewers
  • Completion of foundation and waterproofing
  • During framing of the superstructure
  • The completion of roughing in the plumbing, electrical wiring, gas piping, heating ducts or piping or other similar service installations
  • Before closing in all structural elements
  • Upon final completion of the structure

To schedule an inspection, call the building department at 330-689-2729 at least 24-hours in advance. If you call before 9 a.m. you may be able to get a same day inspection. You can also schedule inspections at the 24-hour voicemail line at 330-689-2728.

To determine the permits required for your project or if you need any additional assistance, call the Stow Building Department at 330-689-2729 or visit them at City Hall 3760 Darrow Rd. between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
