'Little Shop of Horrors:' Mr. Bernstein

Junior Alex Toth tells a little bit about himself, and just gives a hint at what's to come in "Little Shop."

Junior Alex Toth has been around the theater before most current students had ever seen the inside of the high school. After all, his older sister was very active in the drama program, and director Robert Putka often reminds Alex of the times the younger Toth spent running around the auditorium and hallways.

Look ahead quite a few years, and Toth is now a named role in this year's big production of the school's annual musical.

“I was thinking of joining in past years, but I think what got me to do ['Little Shop'] was the fact that Putka is directing the musical this year,” Toth said.

Toth can be seen as the role of Mr. Bernstein, a character who tries to get Seymour (the main character who is played by Bryan Detweiler) to go onto a daily television show. This is only one of many things Seymour has to worry about, as he has a man-eating plant in his possession (the show's main antagonist).

“I would tell you what I plan for [Bernstein], but I don't want to ruin the surprise,” Toth, who also doubles as a singer and dancer, said.

Toth was one of the 12 main characters in the Junior Class Play's “12 Angry Jurors,” and he says that almost immediately after finishing that project came along “Little Shop.”

“We were given our scripts several weeks beforehand and we were expected to be memorized by the first rehearsal,” Toth said. To give another prespective, the JCP show was performed the weekend of Feb. 24, 25 and 26.

The first rehearsal was only two days after the last curtain.

“Well I haven't had just about any problems but some I have seen with others [are] things like keeping in time with the music and remembering some lines,” Toth said.

Toth is obviously very excited to be in the show, as he said that asking what the most exciting element of it is is like asking “a little kid what their favorite ice cream is when they love them all.”

“It's all so great,” Toth added.

Toth is also involved with the SMFHS Japanese Club, the marching band and is a member of the Friends of the Munroe Falls Parks.

Tickets for the show, which go on presale Apr. 9, range from the 12 dollar reserved seating price, the $10 general admission or the $8 senior citizen and student price.

“Little Shop” will go on stage live Apr. 20, 21 and 22.
