What Happened at the July 10 Stow City Council Committee Meeting

At-large councilman Mike Rasor shares his notes from Monday's meetings of Stow City Council.

My notes from Monday's committee meetings are below:

-- We held a lengthy public hearing on the rezoning of the former building on Kent Road. Residents were concerned that rezoning the property and adjacent church as C-6 would increase traffic on Williamson. The owners, Mr. and Mrs. Brandon, expressed the need for rezoning in order to sell or lease the property. The Planning Committee discussed other zoning matters, such as a sign for the new wine bar on Kent Road and construction of a two-story office building near the courthouse.

-- The administration is requesting $50,821.90 as part of a matching grant to implement technology at three intersections to assist people with sight impairments. The money would be taken from the capital improvements fund, which is what we use to repair roads. There is no doubt that making our streets more accessible to blind pedestrians is a noble cause. With that said, our roads fund is already suffering, so I will need compelling justification before diverting such a large sum of money for any purpose.

-- As I wrote 10 days ago, the mayor vetoed the legislation that restructured the engineering department, solely because council rejected the pay raise for a senior engineer (who has not yet been hired). The mayor is taking a second bite at the apple by repackaging the legislation, hoping that council reconsiders the pay raise. As I stated at the meeting, we cannot be giving raises now. It may be a small raise, but it stands to justify raises for other positions. We are still in a fiscal crisis. Now is not the time to go back on our commitment to reduce the city's deficit.

-- Council will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday to vote on these measures. Read more at www.mikerasor.com.
