What Happened at the Nov. 15, 2012 City Council Meeting

At-large councilman Mike Rasor shares his notes from the Nov. 15, 2012 meeting of Stow City Council.

This evening, Stow City Council met for the first and last time in November. My notes are below:

– First, some good news: The occupancy rate in commercial buildings has improved. Buildings on Commerce Drive, for instance, are 92.7 percent occupied. City-wide, retail space is 89.8 percent occupied, office space is 85.5 percent occupied, and industrial is 94.8 percent occupied.

– Second, more good news: The fire department has achieved a Class 3 ISO rating. The ISO rating is compiled for insurance purposes, to judge the effectiveness of each fire department. Only a handful of cities in Stow are rated Class 2, according to Chief Kalbaugh, and that is within reach for us. Congrats to our fire department for this accomplishment. It should lead to cost savings on fire insurance for Stow businesses.

– Third, some leaf-related news: We are extending and revising the dates on the leaf pick-up program. Click here to see the new schedule.

– And last, I will brief you on legislation to give raises to 13 employees, retroactive to 2012 (yes, you read that correctly: RETROACTIVE RAISES). There is a lot that is confidential. But I’ll tell you three things: 1) The whole situation makes me uneasy . . .
