Mike Rasor's Blog: Let the party continue

My notes from last night’s council meeting are posted below:

PARTY ON THE PATIO

There was a large crowd in attendance for a zoning matter involving Roses Run Country Club. As you may know, Roses Run holds its weekly “Party on the Patio” on Thursdays during the summer. From 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., there is a live band. It’s really a unique and fun place to be.

The problem is, Roses Run was never permitted to have outdoor music. Another problem is, a few residents of Pambi Farms (who are upset at the course for other reasons) complained about the music being too loud.

So Roses Run set out to revise their zoning rights, and the council chambers were darn near packed full of Pambi Farms residents — about 98 percent of whom supported the golf course and the continuation of the Party on the Patio.

Before the meeting, I did my due diligence by visiting one of the complaining residents’ homes during a Thursday evening. The music wasn’t loud at all, in my opinion. But, to the resident, it was deafening.

It’s important to judge the reasonableness of people’s complaints. Some folks will literally complain about everything. As representatives, the minority opinion should be respected, but it should also be scrutinized. In this case, the council voted 7-0 to allow the party to continue.

AKRON ZOO

A representative from the Akron Zoo visited City Council to speak about the renewal of the zoo’s tax levy.

But that’s not why I’m mentioning her visit. Rather, she brought with her an armadillo. Seriously, here’s a picture of it. The woman placed the armadillo on the floor in the council chambers, and it began scampering all around. It was truly a fun time for everyone.

OTHER ITEMS

– The Clandestine Meth Lab legislation, with my two amendments, passed 7-0.

– The Stow Fourth of July Parade is Thursday. Please note that roads close at 9:15 a.m. Say “hi” if you see me. I’ll be toward the front of the parade.

– The new water line installed on Marsh Road failed. The city is now determining whether the entire line must be dug up, or a more surgical repair might be feasible.

– I had the privilege of saying the prayer last night. My petition was this: If only politicians could spread the love of God to politicians of competing viewpoints — it would certainly overcome any one contentious political issue, and it would definitely supersede the pride that is so prevalent in politics.

– City Council will meet next on Thursday, July 11 at 6 p.m. for committees, then council. Please join Matt Riehl and me for office hours this coming Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the second hall conference room at City Hall.
