RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, Ohio, and the rest ofthe World, lost a true American hero on August 25, 2012 with the passing of Neil Armstrong; and
WHEREAS, Armstrong was born on August 5, 1930, in Wapakoneta, Ohio, the piace Where he developed his love for flying by taking flying lessons at the county airport - Where at just 15 years old, before he had a driver’s license, Armstrong earned his flight eertiñcate; and
WHEREAS, Armstrong was a decorated naval aviator, receiving the Air Medal for combat missions, a Gold Star, and the Korean Service Medal and
Engagement Stal'I all before leaving active duty Naval service at the age of 22; and I
WHEREAS, after serving as a naval aviator from 1949-1952, Armstrong joined the National Advisory Committee for in 1955. His first assignment was with the NACA Lewis Research Center in Cleveland (now NASA Glenn), followed by assignments over the next 17 years as an engineer, test pilot, astronaut and an administrator for NACA, and its successor agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NAS/X); and
WHEREAS, Armstrong was the spacecraft commander for Apollo ll, the first manned lunar landing mission, and informed Mission Control, "Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landocl”; and
WHEREAS, on July 21, 1969, Armstrollg gained the distinction of
Y being the first manto land a craft on the moon and the to step on its surface,
he exclaimed upon exiting the spacecraft, "That‘s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.”
NOW, THEREFORE, I, John R. Kasich, Governor of the State Of Ohio, do hereby honor the memory of
NEIL A, ARMSTRONG
throughout Ohio and I join all Ohioans in remembering this brave Ohio pioneer. May God bless Neil Armstrong and his family. I
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, bythe authority vested in me as Governor ofthe state of Ohio bythe Ohio Constitution andthe laws ofthe United States 0fAmeriea, do hereby proclaim that the flags ofthe UnitedStates ofAmerioá andthe state of Ohio shall be flown at half-staff upon allpublie buildings and grounds throughout Ohio from sunrise to sunset fromAugust 27 until August 31, 2012.
