Four Stow Officers Aid in High Speed Chase Through Several Cities

The following information was supplied by the Stow Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Four helped chase a man through Stow, Cuyahoga Falls and Akron who was charged for Aug. 18 around 4 p.m.

The Hudson Police Department called Stow for assistance in stopping Gerome Burns, 34, of Akron who fled in a dark grey Cadillac after robbing a Hudson resident of his watch, ring and wallet at gunpoint, according to police.

The driver fled south on S.R. 91 through Stow where an unmarked detective car and a Stow Police cruiser joined the chase, said Stow Lt. Mike Titus.

"A Stow officer deployed stop sticks across Darrow Road (near the ) as the Cadillac and a Hudson Police cruiser approached," he said. "The driver of the Cadillac avoid the stop sticks by driving into the grassy area north of the post office, drove around some trees and came back onto Darrow Road."

After returning to the road, Burns headed back northbound on Darrow Road and was followed by Hudson cruisers and the Stow detective, according to police.

The pursuit continued west on Lillian Road, south on Baumberger Road, west on Winona Road, west on Greentree Road, south on Leewood Road and then west on Graham Road to Route 8 southbound toward Cuyahoga Falls.

"Two marked Stow Police cruisers and a marked Silver Lake Police cruiser joined the pursuit when the Cadillac turned westbound onto Graham Road from Leewood Road," Titus said. "The two Stow marked cruisers continued to pursue the Cadillac as it travelled through Cuyahoga Falls and into Akron. Stow units were eventually joined by an Akron cruiser and the suspect eventually came to a voluntary stop on Lake Shore Boulevard at Ira Avenue near the Akron Metropolitan Housing Authority by Summit Lake."

Aside from some torn up grass, there was no damage in Stow.

Burns was charged by Hudson Police for aggravated robbery and fleeing and eluding charges, both felonies.

Titus said Burns has not be charged by Stow.

"Possible Stow charges would include, failure to comply with order or signal of a police officer (felony), reckless operation (misdemeanor), and driving under suspension (misdemeanor)," he said.
