Sex Offender Charged with Rape by Stow Police

An Akron man previously found guilty of failing to register as a sex offender in Summit County has been charged with rape by Stow Police.

Officers arrested Darryl D. Johnson, 37, on charges of rape, a first-degree felony, and gross sexual imposition, a fourth-degree felony, earlier this month.

Johnson appeared in Stow Municipal Court and his bond was set at $500,000 on July 9 with the condition he have no contact with the complaining victim.

The victim, a 15-year-old Stow girl, told police she was raped twice in April. Police learned of the assaults after a friend of the victim told a counselor at Stow-Munroe Falls High School.

Johnson’s charges have since been bound over to the Summit County Common Pleas Court, where the case awaits further disposition.

In 2011, Johnson was indicted by the Summit County grand jury on charges of failing to register his address with the Summit County Sheriff’s Office as a sex offender. In October 2011 he pleaded guilty to the fourth-degree felony of notice of change of address and was sentenced to 18 months probation.

Johnson was charged with a similar crime of failing to register his address as a sex offender in 2003, 2005 and again in 2007. He was found guilty in each case and sentenced to probation.

Johnson was originally charged in 2000 with rape and corruption of a minor. He pleaded not guilty to the rape charge but eventually pleaded guilty to the corruption charge, a fourth-degree felony, and was sentenced to 12 months in jail and ordered to register his address as a sex offender with the Summit County Sheriff’s Office each year for 10 years.

He is not currently listed on Summit County’s online sex offender registry.
