888 Signatures to Lower Council Pay Submitted to Board of Elections

More than 850 signatures were collected and sent to the Board of Elections for verification for the Nov. 8, 2011 ballot.

City Council Candidate  said the voter-led initiative to reduce council's pay by about $6,500 is in the hands of the Summit County Board of Elections for verification.

The petitions were given to Stow's Deputy Clerk of Council last week, who then turned them into the BOE Aug. 29. 

If the signatures are verified, the next step is to file the issue with the BOE before the Sept. 9 deadline. Law Director Brian Reali said the issue also needs to be approved by council by Sept. 8. The next council meetings are scheduled for Sept. 6 (Tuesday because of the Monday holiday) and 8.

Adaska said 888 signatures were collected. After a portion of the city's , the number of signatures needed was reduced drastically from 2,584 to 780.

Residents circulated a which would allow residents to vote to reduce council's pay to $700 a month or $8,400 annually.

Council voted in April to . Next year, councilors are slated to make $14,950 and the president of council will make an additional $1,000.
