Columbarium Planned for Stow Cemetery

Council signs off on plan to accept bids for proposed urn niches

Stow City Council voted Thursday to move ahead with a plan to build a columbarium at Stow Cemetery on S.R. 59.

Council unanimously approved plans from the city administration to advertise for and accept formal builds for the construction of an 80-niche columbarium at the cemetery.

Columbariums are typically above-ground vaults with spaces or niches for burial urns containing the ashes or cremated remains of the dead.

The cost of the project, when finalized, will be paid for out of the cemetery's perpetual care fund and the city's capital projects fund, according to a memo to council from Stow Service Director Nicholas Wren.

"It will generate sufficient revenue to pay for itself in three to five years," Wren wrote.
