Donations Sought for 9/11 Memorial Garden

The city received a piece of the World Trade Center and plans were revealed to memorialize those who died in the 9/11 attacks in a garden at City Hall.

Plans for a memorial garden at with the  is complete and now the city is asking for $28,000 in private donations to make the plans a reality by the next anniversary of the attacks.

"It's going to be humble and serve as a memorial to all those who lost their lives and those who ran into the burning buildings and those who rescued others: EMS, Port Authority, police, the military at the Pentagon ... ," said Law Director Brian Reali.

Reali, who is on a committee with , former Service Director Dano Koehler, Mayor Sara Drew and Assistant Director of Public Service Nick Wren, said the memorial will go where the flags are now at the doors of City Hall.

The garden is expected to be finished by Sept. 11 this year for the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

"This is a project that will be unsurpassed in its quality and design. Yet, it will be humble, dignified, and appropriate to commemorate the events of 9/11," said Reali. "It's something we’re planning to have here for as long as City Hall is here ... as a place where people will come to reflect."

The memorial garden will have the steel I-beam on top of a polished granite pentagon. For a rendering of what it will look like, view the .pdf attached to this post.

"As much as steel and concrete represent the permanency of loss, the flowers and vegetation surrounding the I-beam will remind all of us of the renewal of life, and that the sacrifices of 9/11 and after have not been in vain, but are worthy of our utmost appreciation and solemn respect," he said.
