Medicine Disposal Program 'Hugely Successful'

The Summit County Health District has provided a safe, environmentally-friendly way to dispose of unused or expired medicines, and people have taken to the program.

In April, the Summit County Health District, in collaboration with local community partners, established the for residents who wanted to safely dispose of their unused drugs.

And for over the last six months, the Dispose of Unused Medicines Properly program has provided residents with a safe, environmentally-friendly way to discard of expired prescription or over-the-counter drugs.

Good news is, the program is working.

“(D.U.M.P.) has been hugely successful here in Stow,” Det. Tom Gottas said. “The collections have been way more than anticipated … the first five boxes of waste that were taken to the incinerator weighed approximately 67 pounds, that's a lot of pills. And that was for less than one month.”

To join the effort, simply head to one of the 12 collection containers located at the addresses listed below.

Pills, capsules, or liquid medications will be accepted at the containers. Syringes will not be accepted. Medications should be kept in the original bottle with the person’s name and address marked out. No questions will be asked, and the medications will be safely destroyed.
