Nearly Half the Funds for the 9/11 Memorial at City Hall Raised

The city is looking for about $16,000 more in private donations so the memorial garden can be a reality by the anniversary of the attacks.

Since March, the city has collected about $12,000 in private donations for a memorial garden at  with an  given to Stow from the New Jersey and New York Port Authority last August.

The city is seeking a total of $28,000 in donations so the plans (featured in the .pdf attached to this post) can become a reality by Sept. 11 for the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

"It's going to be humble and serve as a memorial to all those who lost their lives and those who ran into the burning buildings and those who rescued others: EMS, Port Authority, police, the military at the Pentagon ... ," Law Director Brian Reali previously said.

Reali, who is on a committee with , former Service Director Dano Koehler, Mayor and Director of Public Service Nick Wren, said the memorial will go where the flags are now at the doors of City Hall.

"This is a project that will be unsurpassed in its quality and design. Yet, it will be humble, dignified, and appropriate to commemorate the events of 9/11," said Reali. "It's something we’re planning to have here for as long as city hall is here ... as a place where people will come to reflect."

The memorial garden will have the steel I-beam on top of a polished granite pentagon. For a rendering of what it will look like, view the .pdf attached to this post.

"As much as steel and concrete represent the permanency of loss, the flowers and vegetation surrounding the I-beam will remind all of us of the renewal of life, and that the sacrifices of 9/11 and after have not been in vain, but are worthy of our utmost appreciation and solemn respect," he said.
