POLL: Nuns on the Bus - Can They Make A Difference?

Catholic nuns visited Northeast Ohio this week to oppose federal budget cuts that will impact the needy.

As part of their midwest bus tour this summer from Des Moines, IA to Washington, D.C., Catholic nuns visited a hunger center in Cleveland Tuesday to spread their message about federal budget cuts that will affect the poor.

Basically, these "Nuns on the Bus" are concerned the budget will devastate an already needy segment of the population.

The charitable programs they visited during the tour are run by nuns and receive federal financial support. The nuns are concerned a budget adopted by the House of Representatives that cuts a lot of that money, according to The Plain Dealer.

"We cannot stand by silently when the U.S. Congress considers further enriching the wealthiest Americans at the expense of struggling, impoverished families," according to the Nuns on the Bus website.

While I admire the motive, I wonder what the cost of the bus tour is?

I don't trust any religious organisation with my tax dollars or my charitable donations -- full stop -- and that includes groups like the highly discriminatory Salvation Army (which is technically a religious mission and not a charity) and the truly abhorrent Missions of Charity (Mother Teresa) -- never mind the [adjectives removed to be polite] Catholic Church itself.
The government should not be involved with any religious-based "charity". I'm sure these nuns have a genuine desire to help the poor & the needy -- however, what they don't have is the power or direct access to the funding the government would give to [the *men* in power of] the Catholic Church.

so you think the government would spend your charity dollars better
Richard Ian Tracy June 28, 2012 at 10:55 pm
You certainly have a point, James!
The government is supposed to represent the people -- if they don't, then change the people elected to government. The "government versus us" paradigm never gets anyone anywhere. We are the government. Pay attention. Get angry. Make changes. Stop electing millionaires who relying on fear & ignorance to gain power and then do NOTHING for you [all citizens, that is]. I think the hardest part for most people is the "paying attention" -- our own laziness is what allows government to get out of control and become the enemy. As far as *my* charity dollars go, I support the Red Cross and Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières). Where my taxes go ... well ... there are a lot of things done in my name that don't represent me or even 'goodness' one little bit! So what can we do? Re-read the first paragraph. I'm very much a THINK GLOBALLY, ACT LOCALLY kind of person. You can do the most good with the choices you make daily, the volunteer work you do in your own local community and the 'voting' you do with your wallet.

Yes Red Cross is one of the few honest ones, I have always used this site to check to see how my money is spent >>> http://www.charitynavigator.org/
Just type the charity in the box and it lets you know how much of your money goes to expenses and how much is for the needy

Pray for the" Nuns on th Bus" that they either live up to the vows they took or leave the Catholic Church, for they are nothing but Protestant in their actions......they have dissent from the TRUTH and are scandulous to say the least to those who are weak or lukewarm in the TRUE FAITH of Jesus Christ...they will be accountable in the next life for leading many astray...Obedience comes first before Charity....It's "FAITH" in believing ALL the TRUTHS of The Catholic Faith,"HOPE"- that we will have Eternal Life if we follow them- and LASTLY,"Charity"- moved by FAITH and HOPE to do good to others. They also, do not obey the Greatest Commandment, and that is to Love God First...How? by keeping His Comandments and Precepts....THEN, , it's Love your neighbor as yourself....They have it backwards...so, as far as I can see they are not doing it for anyone but themselves....very selfish indeed...They want to have their reward here, that others can see their good deeds. They are NO St. Theresa's....
May Our Blessed Mother, Mary lead them back to her Son, His Catholic Church, and His True teachings, so they can His voice and discern His words and do HIS WILL, not theirs!
