Stow Fights Crime and Celebrates Annual National Night Out

Police and a local retailer are joining forces to fight crime.

The and have joined forces to help fight crime and bring the National Night Out celebration to Stow community members once again on Aug. 2 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The celebration, on the grassy area of Darrow Road between S.K.I.P. Park and Fire Station No. 1, will offer food, games, prizes and entertainment free of charge for residents of all ages.

“This is an opportunity for the community to come out and meet officers and see what our police department is all about,” said Kathy Christ, Stow Police Department’s youth services education specialist. “We want our residents to feel comfortable with our police officers and know the resources we offer.”

Children can play on inflatables, explore a fire truck, police cruiser while teens and seniors play guitar hero from the D.A.R.E. car. vehicles provided by the National Guard will also be on display for exploring.

Several police officers, including the city’s senior citizen officer, neighborhood watch officer and reserve officers will also be available to talk with residents. Parents can bring their children for finger printing and identification among other planned activities.
Prize giveaways, courtesy of Target, will be given away through a free raffle throughout the evening.

“This year we are working on a few carnival games that we can award prizes for all little children. We also raffle off at least a dozen family prizes like badminton sets, ice cream makers and more,” said Cathy Christy, Target’s event chairperson. “We’ll be offering face painting, and giving away Silly Bandz, courtesy of the national Target headquarters.”

According to Christ, who became involved with the local celebration five years ago, an estimated 700 people are expected to attend this year. 

Hot dogs, chips, cookies and drinks are provided compliments of the police department and Target.

The National Night Out began 28 years ago and is designed to increase drug prevention awareness, encourage involvement in local anti-crime programs, build community spirit and partnerships while sending a message to those who may not abide by the law – neighborhoods are working together and fighting crime.
