Councils, Mayors Meet at Nation's Capitol for Local Government Conference

Stow Councilmembers attended a conference hosted by Congressman Steven LaTourette for local elected officials.

I am so glad to be able to attend the local government conference hosted by Congressman Steven LaTourette.

Spending time tonight at the reception networking with mayors, city council members and city managers, along with various business members and the representatives from the Congressman’s office was very beneficial and I learned many new things from the people I talked with!

Mayor Kathy Procop of Twinsburg, along with Mayor Bill Currin of Hudson were especially helpful in discussing the issues they face in their own communities and how they solve problems. The staff from LaTourette’s office was very gracious in their offers to assist the city of Stow in any way possible and offering suggestions on how to utilize federal resources for projects. It is so beneficial to be able to collaborate with colleagues from other communities and to see how they are handling issues and moving their cities forward in today’s economy.

After the reception and networking event, we were fortunate to be able to be admitted to the Smithsonian Institution for a private viewing of the First Ladies Exhibit, Presidential Exhibit and Star Spangled Banner exhibit. The Smithsonian is an amazing institution and I was so excited for our experience! I was especially interested in the First Ladies exhibit — I am continually impressed by the breadth of experience and impact our First Ladies have had on our country. As one of the mayors in attendance remarked, "it will be a great day when we are visiting the First Gentleman exhibit,"  and I couldn’t agree more!

Tomorrow we have a series of speakers, including one from Federal Emergency Management Agency. I look forward to hearing their presentations and bringing back to Stow the information I gain from attending this conference!

Washington, D.C. is a beautiful city and I am happy to be here with the rest of the Stow contingent:  Mayor Karen Fritschel, At-Large Councilman and Ward I Councilman Matt Riehl. I am sure we will all benefit from our time here and thank the Congressman’s office for their hospitality!

Look for from both Councilwoman Sara Drew and Councilman Mike Rasor during their time in Washington, D.C. this weekend.
