Culinary Students Get Healthy Serving of Achievements (Photos)

"This is the first time in the history of the program that our students have earned this highly respected designation," said Culinary Instructor Tami Garro.

The Culinary Arts and Catering Program at , along with the Six District Educational Compact, had several culinary students earn ProStart Certification by the National Restaurant Association.

Seniors Tony Guy, Shakera Spivey, Mark Bujorian, Hannah Gibson of Tallmadge, Allison Hainer of Cuyahoga Falls, Amanda Ward of Kent and Ryan Parker of Cuyahoga Falls are now certified through the National Restaurant Association ProStart program. 

“We are very proud of our students for their outstanding achievements,” said Culinary Instructor Tami Garro. “This is the first time in the history of the program that our students have earned this highly respected designation."

Through the leadership of Chef Shelley Giangaspero, students are now prepared to move forward with future culinary endeavors, said Garro.

"Through their hard work and dedication, many of our students have earned scholarships at local and national universities and colleges," she said. "It’s been a pleasure to watch them grow as students and as individuals.”

Certification requires 400 hours of work experience — 200 paid hours of culinary work experience and 200 hours of non-paid culinary work experience. Students must also obtain a minimum of 52 (out of 75) competencies listed by the National Restaurant Association. 

Allison Hainer, was awarded a ProStart Scholarship, and Shakera Spivey will receive a Presidential Academic Scholarship.

Hainer will be honored during the Ohio Restaurant Association Celebration of Stars evening in Columbus on May 16; Spivey will be honored at the Senior Recognition Ceremony on May 22 at the high school.
