Veterans Day at Lakeview School

Veterans Day is a great event which combines the efforts of our K-Kids and Club USA, the Lakeview Singers, and many other students under the direction of Susan Deitrick, counselor and the clubs’ co-facilitator, and Christine Lemay, music teacher.

We will be putting on a breakfast and small ceremony to honor our veterans and active military personnel on Nov. 11 in the Lakeview Cafeteria and Gym. All veterans and service men and women of our community, Stow graduates, or friends or family of our school will be invited to attend. Students will work on favors, notes, placemats and other plans for this colossal affair.

In 2010, Lakeview was privileged to have four-star General Donn A. Starry as our keynote speaker. He served in Germany, Korea and Vietnam as the commander of V-Corp, TRADOC, and led the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment into Cambodia. Starry developed the “AirLand Battle Doctrine” that reshaped the way America deals with war.

One man who served for a time under Gen. Starry in Vietnam is Randolph Baxter, who was a tank platoon leader in the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment. Baxter retired from the Army in 1971 and went on to become a lawyer and then judge. Now, newly-retired chief judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Ohio, Judge Baxter will be our keynote speaker this year.

We will have the amazing work of some of our students who entered the “Heroes: Past, Present, and Future” contest, recognizing some of the heroes growing up in their own families. Among the winners, who will be announced at the assembly, we have powerful testimonies in words, pictures, powerpoint and song.

There will also be other speakers, great music. The awesome spirit of all ages converging on the common ground of history will be revealed through real stories of real people who learned the true meaning of true heroes through their experiences.

This will be a living history lesson kids are not likely to forget. The community is invited to participate in this inspiring Veterans Day event at Lakeview Intermediate School.
