Girls Basketball 'Smartest' Team in Ohio

Cumulative GPA for Stow High School lady Bulldogs tops in state

The 12 girls on the Stow-Munroe Falls High School basketball team aren't just skilled on the court.

They're tough to beat in the classroom too.

The varsity team is being recognized by the Ohio High School Basketball Coaches Association for having the best cumulative grade point average across the state of Ohio for the 2012-2013 school year.

The team's cumulative GPA of 3.957 has earned them a pizza party courtesy of the Ohio National Guard and likely some recognition at an upcoming school board meeting.

Coach Bob Podges said he wasn't too surprised by the No. 1 academic ranking given that the team placed in the top five statewide last year.

Podges said one of his players is already taking college curriculum courses at Kent State University.

"Many of our kids are multi-sport athletes," he said. "Some kids play in the band. They’re pretty well-rounded kids."

The team was named the top-ranked academic performing basketball team on Monday.

This season the lady Bulldogs finished with a record of 15-8 and made it to the sectional finals in state playoff action.

"As coach of the Stow girls basketball program we work each day at preparing our players to be successful young women," Podges said. "I know how hard this group has worked to reach their academic achievement. I’m very impressed with what they’ve accomplished."
