Kimpton Band Plays at The University of Akron

It was the first time the band was selected to play in the 40th annual Ohio Band Directors Hall of Fame Professional Convention.

The school's eighth-grade band performed for more than 250 parents, college students and band directors the 40th Annual Ohio Band Directors Hall of Fame Professional Convention at the University of Akron Student Union Ballroom Dec. 3.

"Performing at The University of Akron presented a great learning and growth opportunity for the students. I really feel the group is bonded as a result of the preparation for this performance. The students were excited and nervous but well prepared and ready," said Greg Newman the director of the band. "Being selected to perform for colleagues and mentors was truly an honor."

The Ohio Band Directors Conference features nationally known guest conductors, performers and educators. The conference develops, recognizes and promotes excellence in concert band performances and provides young musicians and their directors with an opportunity to interact and perform.

Among several selections the eighth-grade band members performed is "Christmas Carillon," a work by this year's guest composer, James Curnow.

Curnow has taught in all areas of instrumental music, both in public schools and at the college and university level. As a conductor, composer and clinician, Curnow has traveled throughout the United States, Canada, Australia, Japan and Europe where his music has received wide acclaim.

Curnow has been commissioned to write over two hundred works for concert band, brass band, orchestra, choir and various vocal and instrumental ensembles.
