Stow Student Wins $2,000 National Scholarship

Tommy Bean just might be behind the anchor desk at ESPN some day.

The Stow-Munroe Falls High School teen has earned national recognition for his sports-reporting accomplishments here in Stow.

Bean recently was awarded a $2,000 scholarship for his work covering the Bulldogs athletics. 

Bean transferred to Stow this year and introduced live coverage of sports to the school district's website. Bean broadcast live coverage of high school basketball games online and used the website to give sports updates, post videos and offer a tip of the week to the local sports audience.

The coverage culminated with a submission to a national contest run by Digital Sports, a website that shares local sports coverage from around the country. For his efforts, Bean was named National High School Reporter of the Month for September and December.

This past summer, Bean also worked as an intern with the Akron Aeros and helped film the games to create videos for the scoreboard.

After graduating, Bean said he plans to pursue a degree in film at Kent State University or Full Sail University in Florida.

Bean's accomplishment via Digital Sports also brought with it a $300 prize for the Stow-Munroe Falls Athletic Department.

Stow Athletic Director Cyle Feldman said he is hopeful to have Bean back doing media promotions work in the fall.

"But he will do excellent at the intercollegiate level because he has prepared himself well," Feldman said. "I wish him nothing but the best as he pursues a degree in film because he is good at it."
