Superintendent Recommends $2 Million in Cuts, District Layoffs

The Board of Education will consider $2 million in cuts during Monday night's meeting.

Superintendent Dr. Russ Jones said Friday he will recommend $2 million in operational cuts to the district during the Monday Board of Education meeting.

One administrator, 10 teaching positions and six classified positions will be cut next year, Jones said. Also, 10 certified positions will not be replaced next year.

Included in those cuts, nine positions will be eliminated at . Kimpton will also lose one classified position, will lose one classified position and the high school will lose four, he said.

"As you remember, our we presented did not look very good," said Jones. "As we're moving forward, consequently the district needs to take action to address our financial situation. We have a two-pronged approach to deal with it:"

  1. The board is expected to approve putting a on the Aug. 2 ballot. The 10-year levy would generate $6.5 million.
  2. $2 million in operating reductions.

For the owner of a $100,000 home, the levy would cost:

  • $201.21 annually
  • $100.60 for half a year
  • $16.77 a month
  • 55 cents a day

"To only put a levy on the ballot, we would need to ask for a 14- or 15-mill levy to be solvent for three to four years. Obviously, that's not realistic," the superintendent said.
