4th of July Safety Tips from the Stow Fire Department

The best tip from the department? "The best way to celebrate the Fourth of July with fireworks is to let the professionals do it for you."

During the last week, the Stow Fire Department has been posting useful tips and information to its 343 followers on Facebook about precautions to take this holiday.

In 2011, fireworks caused an estimated 17,8000 reported fires, including 1,200 total structure fires, 400 vehicle fires, and 16,300 outside and other fires, Fire Capt. Mark Stone posted on Facebook. These fires resulted in an estimated eight reported civilian deaths, 40 civilian injuries and $32 million in direct property damage. The attached YouTube video recounts one incident from 2012.

The department also shared a Fireworks Fact Sheet outline the types of fireworks that are legal and illegal in Ohio.

"Historically, the risk of fireworks injury is highest for children ages 5-19, and adults 25-44," Stone wrote. "We want you to stay safe so here's a video from the National Fire Protection Association that demonstrates just how dangerous these consumer fireworks can be."

Stone said residents who still have questions about firework safety should call the department at 330-689-3290.

"We want the public to be informed consumers who stay safe while they enjoy this summertime holiday," he said.
