The swim teams took their talents to the Busby Natatorium on the campus of Cleveland State University for the 2012 Northeast Ohio Conference Championships.
The NOC’s seventeen teams competed for the overall championship and divisional championship. The boys team finished 2nd in the River Division behind North Royalton and 7th overall.
The girl’s team finished 4th in the River Division and 9th overall. All the Bulldogs competed in the prelims in the morning with several swimmers qualifying for the finals in the evening.
Qualifying in the championship finals in individual and relay events (top 10 places) were Sr. Jeremy Wentz, Sr. Jessie Lee, Sr. Joe Freudeman, Jr. Cameron Potter, Jr. Parker Gabriel, Jr. Jacob Earle, Soph. Lindsey Adkins, Soph. Jenni Heid, Soph Cody Vantrease, Fr. Kelly Vantrease and Fr. Kelsey Wenk.
Cody Vantrease was the highest seeded swimmer for the Bulldogs going into the evening finals. Vantrease was seeded second in the 100 free and 6th in the 200 Free. Vantrease’s time of 49.11 in the 100 Free won the River Division and led to a 2nd place finish in the over all standings.
Vantrease took second in the River Division in the 200 Free with a 1:49.66 finishing 5th over all. Vantrease said, “It feels great to be able to compete with the better swimmers in our conference.”
Earle had a strong finish in the 100 breast winning the River Division with a time of 1:05.15. Lee won the River Division in the 100 Breast with a time of 1:14.26. Wenk’s 6th place overall finish in the100 back was a strong performance for a freshman. In the 100 fly, Freudeman finished 9th.
Also winning the River Division was the boys 400 free relay team of Wentz, Potter, Parker Gabriel and Cody Vantrease with a time of 3:31.81. The girl’s 400 Free relay team of Lindsey Adkins, Kelly Vantrease, Heid, and Wenk finished 10th. In addition, Stow’s diver, Will Sheppard, took first in the River Division with a score of 287.5 finishing 14th overall.
In the consolation finals, (places 11-20), Jacob Earle finished first and 11th over all in the IM. In the 50 free both Parker Gabriel and Jenni Heid finished 18th. In the girl’s 100 free Lindsey Adkins finished 14th and Kelly Vantrease finished 19th. In the 500 Free Jr. Mason Gabriel went on to finish 20th while his twin brother Parker Gabriel, finished 17th in the 100 Free. In the 100 Back, Blohm finished 12th. Senior Captain Haley Adkins earned a 14th place in the 100 Breast.
This was Adkins’s first ever appearance in a finals in her swimming career at Stow. Adkins added, “I was seeded 15th so I knew I would have to swim faster than that time to make it. After the prelim race, even though my coach told me I made it, I had to check for myself. In the finals I was able to drop time. That was so exciting.”
