The high school will get a Distance Learning Lab after partnering with the University of Akron.
Beginning this fall when high school students return to school, they will have the option to take college-level courses in a new Distance Learning Laboratory. "Stow-Munroe Falls High School is excited to partner with the University of Akron on this initiative. Increasing opportunities for our students to earn college credit while in high school continues to be an important area of focus. The Distance Learning Lab will prove a great benefit for our students," said Principal Chris DiMauro in a prepared statement. Fake $20 bill used at high school restaurant
Joshua's Restaurant at Stow-Munroe Falls High School fell victim to a counterfeit bill recently. An advisor for the student-run restaurant, which is part of the culinary program at the high school, told Stow Police that someone used a counterfeit $20 bill to pay for their meal. The school was unaware a counterfeit bill had been used until FirstMerit Bank contacted the district about a week after it had been used to notify them of the fake money. It's unclear if police have any suspects. The fake $20 bill was apparently used on April 10 — just a few days after the restaurant reopened following spring break — though it wasn't reported to police until this month.

Stow high school seniors to learn about drunk driving on eve of prom night
Nearly 500 seniors at Stow-Munroe Falls High School will learn the dire consequences of drinking and driving on the eve of prom night. Friday the school will host its annual Prom Promise, a program spread over the course of the morning meant to show students the potentially deadly and life-altering consequences of mixing alcohol into year-end celebrations. Lisa Heilmeier, a social studies teacher at the high school and event organizer, said the annual event starts with a mock car crash, followed by a choreographed funeral for a crash victim and then a staged criminal trial for the driver. Council holds first hearing on proposed 0.25 percent income tax increase for law enforcement purposes
It will be at least another month before voters in Stow know if they'll see a 0.25 percent income tax increase on the November ballot to pay to put cops in schools. Stow City Council talked at length, and with some heated exchanges, Thursday about the recommendation from Stow Mayor Sara Drew's Safety Task Force to put the tax increase on the ballot in order to put Stow Police Department school resource officers in each of the Stow-Munroe Falls City Schools nine buildings. Stow council will hold first talks on proposed tax hike for school resource officers
The 0.25 percent income tax increase Mayor Sara Drew proposed in April to put police officers in Stow schools will have its first review by Stow City Council Thursday. Council is scheduled to talk about the issue Thursday and the suggestion, which came from Drew and the Stow Safety Task Force, to put the tax increase on the Nov. 5 ballot. The measure, if placed on the ballot by council and approved by voters, would generate between $1.6 million and $1.7 million annually based on the city's existing collections. That money would be earmarked specifically for law enforcement spending to hire nine school resource officers. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. You can see the details about Stow High School's ranking, and every other ranked high school by clicking on the markers in the interactive map above. The survey scores were then weighted and calculated using several criteria including on-time graduation and college acceptance rates. In addition, instead of averaging the number of courses offered, this year Newsweek considered the percentage of students enrolled in AP, IB or Advance International Certificate courses. For clean and accurate record-keeping, the Stow-Munroe Falls School District was given an Auditor of State Award with distinction recently. In the latest audit, the state noted there were no findings and the district is considered to be a low risk auditee. The report is for record keeping between July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012. Stow-Munroe Falls is the 56th best high school in Ohio and 1,206th nationally, according to the annual rankings prepared by U.S. News & World Report. There are 242 public high schools in Ohio. The school recieved the silver medal and was praised for its participation rate in Advanced Placement courses. Members of high school student council volunteer at homes of Stow-area senior citizens
About 60 members of the Stow-Munroe Falls High School student council spent Tuesday afternoon helping area senior citizens with yard work. The students volunteered as part of the council's annual Spring Clean-Up, during which students visit the homes of Stow senior citizens to help with the heavy lifting of yard work. Trudy Thomas was just one of those seniors who benefitted from Tuesday's student muscle. Thomas said she's had two back surgeries and relishes the free help provided by the high schoolers. "It's great what they do, I really appreciate it," Thomas said.
