Hundreds Relay for Life in Stow, $70,000 Raised

“The bottom line is we have much to be proud of in this community. Our hats go off to all of the participants.”

More than 375 residents raised over $70,000 for the American Cancer Society this past weekend by taking turns walking around an outdoor “track” at Akron General Health and Wellness Center North for 24 consecutive hours. Members of the 26 teams entered in the Stow-Munroe Falls Relay for Life played games, ran on-site fundraisers, enjoyed live entertainment, camped out, laughed plenty and, at times, shed tears. Norene Jones of Stow, relay co-chair, is thrilled with the success of the 2011 event — not just in terms of dollars raised, but also because cancer awareness received a huge boost in the community. Local Students to Honor Cancer Survivors at 2011 Stow-Munroe Falls Relay for Life Event

This year's event will focus on celebrating more birthdays.

Students have been busy designing thoughtful birthday cards and placemats for cancer survivors which will be presented during the Stow-Munroe Falls Relay for Life this weekend. The Relay for Life event is at the Akron General Health and Wellness Center – North, 4300 Allen Rd. beginning at 10 a.m. June 4 and ending at 10 a.m. June 5. Highland Elementary School students designed birthday cards, and Lakeview Intermediate School students and Club USA students crafted placemats which will be used during the survivor dinner. “The students are very service-oriented, and this year they took on the Relay for Life for the first time,” said event co-chair Norene Jones. “In addition to making the birthday cards, students also created a big banner that…

A 2011 Graduate With Honors: William Thorsson

This top Stow-Munroe Falls honors student is considering leaving the country to continue his education.

William Thorsson, son of Robert and Lynn Thorsson of Stow, doesn’t just talk about leadership, he lives it out. During his four years at the high school, William was president of National Honor Society, treasurer for the Speech and Debate team, treasurer for the Interact Club (“a teenage version of Rotary,” he explains), Academic Challenge competitor and tennis team member. He participated in the Stanford University Education Program for Gifted Youth, where he took three weeks of summer studies in discrete mathematics. Outside of school, William has served as a captain and participant for the Stow Relay For Life, raising more than $1,600 for the American Cancer Society during a five-year period.   William is looking forward to majoring in …
