Ohio Boy's Death Sparks Nationwide Porch Light Vigil

When Gino Altieri of Stow lost his battle with cancer on June 24, communities near and far participated in a porch light vigil. Check out Stow Patch's most-read story of 2012.

Editor's Note: This week, we'll feature Stow Patch's best posts from 2012. Here's our most-read piece about a boy who inspired a nation with his passing. On Christmas Eve, we ask that you switch your porch light on and remind little Gino, and those like him, that hope is shining brightly in Stow.  After Gino Altieri, 10, of Stow, died on June 24 after a two-year battle with cancer, Fishcreek PTA President Jen Taylor decided to start a porch light vigil to mourn his passing.  The news of his death moved people from Stow and around the country — in Texas, Illinois, New York, Pennsylvania, Georgia, South Carolina and even in Stow's backyard in Cuyahoga Falls — to turn their porch lights on for Gino. Even a family from England said in the …

Communities Help Raise Thousands for Stow Kindergartener with Cancer

The owner of a Kent restaurant helped put on the fundraiser for the Stow student.

More than $8,000 was raised last Sunday when hundreds of people poured into Laziza in Kent to show an outpouring of love for a Stow Kindergartener with cancer.  Keith Burkett, a Fishcreek Elementary Kindergarten student, was diagnosed with an unspecific soft tissue sarcoma.  According to Jennifer Morris, who helped organize the event July 8, Keith's doctors are optimistic that chemotherapy and radiation will shrink the tumor to a size when it can be surgically removed.   "It will be a year or more of hospital stays for Keith," she said. So, to help the family, Morris, other volunteers and Laziza owner Michael Awad organized a fundraiser dinner. "There were about 180 tickets sold and we had a silent auction," Morris said. "The owner and his…

Chief Said Being Relay Ambassador is Another Way to Protect and Serve

Stow's police chief was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2009.

Stow Police Chief Louis Dirker was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in March of 2009, but until recently when he was selected to be the Relay for Life Ambassador, only a few knew he had follicular cancer. "I thought a while about being the Ambassador due to my position and making this illness public, but after some reflection I decided that I should accept since the main reason that I selected police work as my career was in order to protect and serve the community," said Dirker. "I came to realize that by accepting the invitation to be the Ambassador at the Relay for Life I was merely performing another public service by sharing my story and encouraging people to be aware of changes in their bodies, moods and energy levels." The …

Women Raise Thousands for Breast Cancer Research at Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk

A team of women from Stow and North Canton are participating in the three day walk that begins Friday

The Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure can be a hot, sweaty, grueling, ache-causing 60-mile walk. But it can also be an amazing journey and well worth the effort, say members of a Stow-based team named Saving Our Boobs. Team captain Jenifer Patton and teammates Gretchen Gies, Nancy Rutherford and Sue Kemmerline, all of Stow, and Barbara Tidman of North Canton, will head to Cleveland on this morning to set off on that long journey. Each team member has raised more than $2,500 in donations that will help fund breast cancer research and community programs through the Susan G. Komen Foundation. This is Patton’s second year participating in the three-day event, which she walks in honor of her mother-in-law, two aunts and a cousin — all of whom …
