The Ohio State Highway Patrol said the checkpoint it announced earlier this week was will be in Portage County Saturday evening. The exact location of the drunken driving checkpoint will be known Saturday morning. Check Patch for an update. The county where the checkpoint will be set up will not be announced until the day prior to the operation.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol sent out a press release Monday morning notifying the public that state troopers will conduct a drunken driving checkpoint sometime this week. The county where the checkpoint will be set up will be announced the day before and the exact location will be announced the morning of the checkpoint. "If you plan to consume alcohol, designate a driver or make other travel arrangements before you drink. Don't let another life be lost for the senseless and selfish act of getting behind the wheel impaired," the patrol said in a prepared statement. A 30-year-old Clinton man has been charged with drunken driving after losing control and crashing his car on Darrow Road last week, according to a Stow police report. Police said the man went off the side of Darrow Road when he crashed and he doesn't not have a driver's license. When police arrived, they suspected the man had been drinking and he blew a 0.122 in a breath test, the report stated. The legal limit is 0.08. No one was injured in the accident. Police charged the man with drunken driving, failure to control, and not having a valid operator's license. This is his first drunken driving offense, police said.

A 40-year-old Cuyahoga Falls man was pulled over at the intersection of Graham and Fishcreek roads on Jan. 7 after running a red light, according to a Stow policereport. The officer clocked Daniel Pivarski driving 60 mph in a 35 mph, zone, the report said. After running the red light, he was pulled over. Officers could tell Pivarski was heavily intoxicated and he was holding a mug with an iced mixed drink in it, the report said. Pivarski also had a jar with two small bags of marijuana in it. The man refused a breath test. Police charged Pivarski with drunken driving, speeding, running a red light and possession of drugs. Pivarski has three prior drunken driving convictions, according to police.

On Dec. 29, a drunken Stow man slammed into the back of two cars stopped at the intersection of Graham and Darrow roads, according to a Stow police accident report. All three drivers were headed north on Darrow Road when 52-year-old Randall Day hit them from behind. One driver was from Hudson, 53, the other was a Stow resident and business owner, 49. Both victims had two passengers, and no one was seriously injured. Day is facing charges of assured clear distance and driving under the influence. On Dec. 21, officers pulled over a car for weaving in its lanes on Graham Road, according to a Stow police report. A 17-year-old from Independence was driving and had a passenger, also 17, from Independence, in the car, the report stated. Officers asked the driver to perform and breath test, and she blew at 0.107. The legal limit is 0.08. Officers also found a box of Franzia wine in the car, the report stated. Police charged the driver with drunken driving, prohibitions, curfew and weaving in lanes. Police charged the passenger with curfew and prohibitions.

DUI checkpoints are not about getting drunks of the road. They are used to get the citizens trained to comply without argument. If the police wanted to get drunks of the road ,they would park outside of bars and watch drunks get into their cars.. check points violate the fourth amendment of the constitution.   more ›
