Free Martin Luther King Jr. Day Events Abound in Cleveland

Monday, Jan. 21 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. For some, the national holiday honoring the prominent civil rights activist is a time to do community service, be it through removing graffiti or picking up litter in a local park. For others, it’s an opportunity to educate themselves about King and his life's work. And for others, it’s a time to just kick back and enjoy the prolonged weekend. Looking for something to do? Cleveland, with its wealth of cultural institutions, celebrates King's life with free museums, community concerts, and regional theater presentations.  The Holiday's History Martin Luther King Jr. Day, now a U.S. holiday, took 15 years to create. National Day of Service: Find a Volunteer Activity Near You

Today, communities across the country will find ways to give back and honor Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy through the National Day of Service. According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, this tradition began in 2009 with President Barack Obama’s first Inauguration. This year, the presidential Inauguration and Martin Luther King Jr. Day land on the same day of the year, and the National Day of Service in honor of King is taking place on Saturday. To find volunteer opportunities near Stow, use the corporation’s website or the National Day of Service’s website. C'mon Stow! Surely there is a church food bank or some sort of program in Stow that could use the physical help of the community! In order to get more people involved, local businesses and organizations need to become more pro-active in getting the word out!   more ›
